Today we’d like to introduce you to David Buzan.
Hi David, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
From a young age, writing was something that completely fascinated me. I sold my first short story while in high school, and began getting other stories and magazine articles published soon after that. I began screenwriting after graduating from film school, and was fortunate enough to have several of those scripts optioned. In 2023, my debut novel was published by Black Rose Writing. In November of 2026, my third novel will be released.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
The creative journey itself is not so much about the destination as it as about the experiences along the way that forge the endurance required to meet your goals. It’s certainly never a smooth road. In my own endeavors, there was a multi-decade gulf between being first published and having my debut novel released. You have to learn the art of appreciating rejection every bit as much as praise. As motivators, both fuel the dream in different ways. The struggle is remembering why you started, and holding on to the belief of where you’ll end up.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I’m an author who is known for writing historical action thrillers.
“In the Lair of Legends” (2023) was my debut novel that launched right out of the gate as a bestseller and a multi-award winner. While readers enjoyed the large-scale action sequences and monster mayhem inherent to the story, what truly drove word of mouth on the book was its spiritually-centered protagonist: Chief Jolon Winterhawk. He’s both a Civil War veteran (historically, a quarter-million Native Americans served and fought in that conflict) as well as being a Nez Perce warrior. Jolon’s dichotomy of duty towards his nation and his tribe brings depth and cultural resonance to this story and I am extremely proud of.
For its bestselling 2025 sequel (“In the Wrath of Legends”), the story centers around Chenoa, the warrior daughter of Chief Winterhawk, who finds herself embroiled in a dual firestorm of politics and honor after uncovering a deadly conspiracy that threatens to destroy the legacy of her father. Once again, I was able to use historical foundation as the framework to a unique literary adventure.
To bring unrepresented characters to life and introduce readers to parts of history they may not be familiar with has been a challenging and rewarding endeavor.
What do you like and dislike about the city?
What I like best about Keizer is actually the reason that I moved here: community.
While working as a restaurant General Manager here, the people were so warm and embracing towards me that it finally convinced me to move to Keizer. That was 15 years ago now, and I still find the people here just as friendly and engaging as they’ve ever been.
As Keizer continues to grow, I hope that more businesses see fit to invest their time, talents, and resources in the city.
