Today we’d like to introduce you to Javier Puga-Phillips.
Hi Javier , so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I’m Javier Puga-Phillips, a real estate broker with Cascade Hasson Sotheby’s International Realty in Portland, Oregon. I’m originally from Guadalajara, Mexico, and I work in both English and Spanish.
Real estate became the right path for me because it’s people-first work. It’s not just contracts and numbers — it’s helping someone make a major life move with a clear plan, strong guidance, and calm leadership. I’m very hands-on, I communicate clearly, and I focus on protecting my clients from start to finish.
Today, I serve buyers and sellers across the Portland metro area, and I’m also licensed in Oregon, California, and Mexico, which helps when clients have cross-border connections or long-term plans.
Community work is also a big part of who I am. I serve as Vice President of Pride Connect, Sotheby’s International Realty’s LGBTQ+ and ally affinity group. I’m also Vice Chair with Educate Ya!, a Portland nonprofit focused on bilingual education, cultural exchange, and programs that support the Latino community as they navigate systems and build opportunity in Oregon.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
I started my business in California, and in 2020 I moved to Portland right at the beginning of the pandemic. I arrived with no local network and had to rebuild everything from zero — relationships, referrals, community, and credibility — in a market that was changing week by week. That forced me to get very intentional about my systems, my marketing, and how I showed up for people.
On a personal level, I’ve also faced serious health challenges. I’ve battled cancer twice. The second time was a recurrence in 2019, and I went through hormone therapy and radiation. That experience changed my perspective. It made me more patient, more focused, and very clear on what matters: health, time, and the people we love.
Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about Real Estate ?
I’m a self-employed real estate broker with Cascade Hasson Sotheby’s International Realty, serving the Portland metro area. I run my business independently, which means my clients work directly with me — not passed around a team. I’m the point person from strategy to closing. I also work in both English and Spanish.
What I do is guide buyers and sellers through major decisions with clear planning, strong marketing, and smart negotiation. On the listing side, I’m known for thoughtful pricing strategy, clean presentation, and marketing that attracts the right buyers — not just “more eyeballs.” On the buyer side, I help clients compete intelligently, understand the contract, and stay protected throughout the process.
What makes you happy?
Swimming makes me happy because it resets my mind. It gives me energy, keeps me grounded, and reminds me that progress comes from consistency — one lap at a time.
My husband, Isaac, makes me happy because he’s my home base. He’s my partner in everything, and life feels lighter and stronger with him.
My dog, Guapo, makes me happy because he brings pure joy into the everyday. He keeps me present, gets me outside, and honestly makes me laugh when I need it most.
Traveling makes me happy because it keeps life interesting. It gives me perspective, new ideas, and it reminds me how big the world is — and how important it is to stay curious.
And learning makes me happy because I’m always trying to grow. Whether it’s improving my business, becoming a better communicator, or understanding something new, I love the feeling of leveling up. It keeps me inspired — and it makes me better for the people I serve.
