Today we’d like to introduce you to Meghan Hanes.
Hi Meghan, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I’ve been a social worker for over eight years, supporting individuals through mental health challenges and major life transitions. I was drawn to this field after my own experiences with mental health and navigating unhealthy coping, which shaped the way I approach my work today—with compassion, curiosity, and a trauma-informed lens.
My background includes crisis work on a mobile crisis team, serving as a co-responder alongside Seattle police, and supporting individuals through civil commitments and mental health holds in Deschutes County. I’ve also worked in hospital settings, including emergency department and psychiatric social work.
After becoming a mother, I felt called to build something different. I transitioned into private practice to create more flexibility, autonomy, and space for growth—both for myself and for the clients I serve. This shift has also allowed me to expand how I support people, including developing educational resources, digital products and courses, and supervising newer clinicians as they grow in the field. Today, my work focuses on helping high-functioning individuals better understand their coping patterns and create meaningful, sustainable change.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
No, definitely not. My path into private practice wasn’t a smooth or linear transition. I moved from agency work straight into building my own practice without much knowledge of what that actually entailed, so a lot of it has been learning as I go. I’ve had to figure out everything from marketing and billing to refining my areas of expertise and how I want to show up in this work. Specifically, trying to learn how to get a constant referral source, connecting with my ideal clients, and advertising my business, has been a work in progress.
There’s also been the challenge of balancing multiple roles—providing therapy, developing courses and resources, and growing a business—while still supporting my family. Deciding where to invest in coaching or additional support has been another learning curve. It hasn’t been easy, but it’s been incredibly meaningful to build something that aligns with both my values and the kind of impact I want to have.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I’m a trauma-informed therapist specializing in working with high-functioning, high-achieving individuals who often appear to have everything together on the outside but feel overwhelmed, burned out, or stuck in patterns of coping on the inside. Much of my work focuses on helping people better understand their relationship with stress, substances, and their nervous system—without shame or judgment.
I integrate EMDR therapy into my work to help clients process underlying trauma and reduce the intensity of patterns that feel hard to change. I’m known for taking a non-pathologizing, curiosity-driven approach—helping people understand the “why” behind their behaviors so they can create more sustainable, meaningful change.
What I’m most proud of is creating a space where people feel seen—especially those who don’t fit typical stereotypes of struggling. I’ve also expanded my work beyond therapy by developing courses and resources and supervising newer clinicians. What sets me apart is the combination of clinical training, lived experience, and my ability to translate complex concepts into practical, real-life tools.
