Exploring Life & Business with Donna Kern of Bella Nuova

Today we’d like to introduce you to Donna Kern.

Hi Donna, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
Because of my passion for helping others feel confident in their own skin, my journey into the spa industry began long before Bella Nuova ever opened its doors.

For more than two decades, I worked in the medical field—including emergency medicine, where I served as an EMT Paramedic at a local fire station, and later in the Emergency Room at our local hospital. I went on to work in neurology, managing my own clinic of patients each day, and eventually spent several years in dermatology—where I witnessed firsthand how deeply skin health impacts not only physical appearance, but emotional well-being.

It was during this time that I saw patients searching for answers—often overwhelmed by aggressive treatments or results that didn’t truly restore their confidence.

That’s where everything shifted for me.

I felt there had to be a better way—one that combined real clinical understanding with a more thoughtful, restorative approach. One that didn’t sacrifice health for beauty, but instead honored both.

Rooted in my Italian heritage, I’ve always been drawn to a different philosophy of care—one that values ritual, simplicity, and intention. In Italian culture, beauty has never been about excess or quick fixes, but about consistency, nourishment, and taking time to care for the body as a whole. That perspective stayed with me, quietly shaping the way I began to see skin health and treatment.

Guided by both my medical background and my passion for skincare, I transitioned into esthetics, where I could work more closely with clients—hands-on, personalized, and focused on long-term skin health. Over time, my approach evolved beyond treating the skin alone. I became deeply committed to a more holistic philosophy—one that considers overall wellbeing, internal health, and the connection between how we feel and how we look.

I saw an opportunity to shift the industry away from quick fixes and surface-level treatments, and toward something more meaningful: supporting the skin in a way that honors the body as a whole. This philosophy became the foundation of my work—where results are not only visible, but rooted in balance, health, and long-term vitality.

From there, Bella Nuova Day Spa was born.

I created Bella Nuova to be more than just a spa—it’s a space where science meets holistic skin health. Every treatment is thoughtfully designed, blending clinical knowledge with old-world Italian influence—where touch, technique, and time are just as important as the products themselves. It’s an experience that feels both refined and restorative, bringing a sense of European tradition into a modern West Coast setting.

My goal has always been simple: to deliver visible results while creating a moment of calm, care, and confidence for every client who walks through the door.

This journey eventually led to the creation of Solea Skincare—an extension of everything I believe in. Inspired by the Italian philosophy of doing less, but doing it well, each product is clean, thoughtfully formulated, and designed to support the skin without compromising its integrity.

Today, Bella Nuova stands as a reflection of that vision—where experience, heritage, and purpose come together to redefine what skincare can feel like.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It hasn’t been a smooth road—and I wouldn’t expect it to be. Transitioning from a structured medical career into entrepreneurship meant stepping into the unknown and building something from the ground up. There were moments of uncertainty, long hours, and the constant pressure of wanting to do everything at the highest level. But every challenge reinforced why I started—to create something more meaningful, more intentional, and more aligned with true skin health.

Along the way, I’ve learned that growth doesn’t come from ease—it comes from persistence, adaptability, and staying rooted in your values. Each obstacle has shaped Bella Nuova into what it is today: a place built with purpose, resilience, and an unwavering commitment to doing things differently.

Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about Bella Nuova?
I see my work as building something intentional—where every detail has a purpose. Rather than following traditional spa models, I’ve focused on creating an experience that feels both elevated and grounded in real skin health. Bella Nuova specializes in customized facials, waxing services, and advanced specialty treatments designed to support the skin long-term rather than chase quick fixes. It’s about slowing things down, being thoughtful in the approach, and creating results in a way that feels restorative as well as effective.

There’s also a strong influence of Italian philosophy in how I approach my work—where care is seen as a ritual, not a rush. That mindset has shaped Bella Nuova into a space that blends refined experiences with meaningful results. Beyond the treatments themselves, I wanted clients to feel welcomed and cared for in a more personal way, incorporating touches inspired by old-world European hospitality—whether that’s offering cappuccinos, small bites, or simply creating an atmosphere that encourages people to slow down and enjoy the experience. It’s not just about what we do, but how it’s done—creating an environment where clients feel a sense of calm, confidence, and trust the moment they walk in.

Do you have any advice for those just starting out?
My advice would be to stay grounded in your values and not feel pressured to follow what everyone else is doing. It’s easy to get caught up in trends or compare your journey to others, especially in an industry that moves quickly. What I’ve learned is that building something meaningful takes time, consistency, and a clear sense of purpose.

I also wish I had known how important it is to trust your own vision early on. There will always be noise—opinions, advice, and expectations—but not all of it will align with what you’re trying to create. The more you stay focused on what feels intentional and true to your standards, the stronger and more authentic your business will become.
