Hidden Gems: Meet Joseph Logan of Spey Roofing

Today we’d like to introduce you to Joseph Logan.

Joseph, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
Our business is Spey Roofing. The name “Spey” refers to an advanced fly-fishing technique that uses a two-handed rod, usually 11 to 15 feet long. It stems from my (Joseph, co-owner) love of fly fishing and my previous career as a fly-fishing guide on the Deschutes River. My love of flyfishing came from my late Grandpa Bob, who taught me how to flyfish and also owned a small lumber pallet business. He has been my biggest role model. Growing up, watching his genuine love for people, his admiration, and how hard a worker he was, inspired, guided, and shaped how I wanted to be in life. I started this company three years ago with my girlfriend, now-wife, Nina, but I have been in roofing since I was 16 years old. After being a fly-fishing guide, I knew I wanted to return to roofing. Building a successful business that I could pass down to my children was a big dream of mine.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
It has not been a smooth road. Central Oregon, particularly Bend, has been one of the fastest-growing cities in Oregon and the nation. That has been positive for our business, as new homes and many kinds of new construction have been built. On the other hand, there have been even more competitors and more companies locally, and not trying to get all the work. We pride ourselves on being a small, locally owned business, and we do feel community members appreciate that, but sometimes it can be overlooked by our bigger competitors. My wife Nina, who is a private investigator, stepped back from her career to help build Spey Roofing into what it is now. We’ve had to find the balance between husband and wife, business partners, and knowing when to shut off the business talks for the day and enjoy our time together and with our kids.

Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
We are a roofing company specializing in residential and commercial buildings. Living in Central Oregon, we get every season and any type of weather you can think of. During the summer, we work with a lot of GAF shingles and metals from another locally owned business, Caliber Metals. During the winter, we offer winter prep, snow removal, and insulation. We offer free inspections and no-obligation estimates. We also offer discounted services and referral programs. I feel being born and raised in Bend really sets us apart from our competitors. We are your neighbors. We saw Bend in its small-town era 15 years ago, and it has since doubled in size. We’re able to confidently relate to and answer any questions customers have about roofing and any project they may have, as we have collaborated with many other service companies throughout the years. Our brand is everything to us. My wife and I come from intergenerational poverty. We both came from very little, so when we decided to start our business, we took a big leap with nothing to catch us if we fell. Being able to showcase our brand as a Latino-owned, local, family-run business is something we can cherish and truly be proud of.

What has been the most important lesson you’ve learned along your journey?
I’ve learned that running a business is not easy. There’s a lot of risk that sometimes doesn’t come with a reward. A positive attitude and transparency with our community and customers have brought us a long way and have brought most of our business through word of mouth, and we intend to keep it that way. Our family lives by the motto “work hard, play hard.” As much energy as we put into our business, we also put into enjoying the lands, fishing on the Deschutes, nature hikes, riding dirt bikes, and central Oregon’s epic scenery with our two kids. Spey Roofing recently won the 2026 Best in Bend in the “roofing” category. We are honored to win, and it goes to show that even though we are a small fish in a big pond, we’re still impactful within our community, and for that, we are grateful.
