Hidden Gems: Meet Mike Falco of Medford Family Christmas Trees/ Calico Christmas Trees

Today we’d like to introduce you to Mike Falco.

Hi Mike, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
We are a family run business. We have lived in the Rogue Valley almost our whole lives with spending summers in Camas Valley, OR. We started a Christmas tree lot in Medford 12 years ago, and this past year we purchased one of the tree farms from the valley we spent our summers at.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
All in all it has been good. We enjoy working together as a family and serving the community during the holiday season. As far as the tree farm, it is an adventure we are newer to, and we are learning alot and enjoying the journey.
The obstactles or challenges would be that it can be harsh weather working outside in the month of December, knowing how many trees to harvest and how many to plant. Also on the farm there has been a learning curve with the planting process. Many people may not know but it takes 7-9 years to grow a Christmas tree, so getting the seedlings in the ground and growing on time is crucial.

As you know, we’re big fans of Medford Family Christmas Trees/ Calico Christmas Trees. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about the brand?
In regards to the tree lot, we are a stand alone full service tree lot and we provide a clean, safe, and festive atmosphere. We have full customer service when you come pick your tree. We fresh cut it, load it up on the vehicle, and we try and keep a variety of trees/sizes/pricing to fit your needs. We keep them standing so you can pick the one that works best for your home. You can find us at the Rogue Valley Mall on the corner of McAndrews and Riverside during the holiday season.
For the tree farm, which is 90 minutes away from the tree lot, we offer beautiful nobles, nordmans, grands and douglas firs. We have u-cuts on the farm and we are open the weekend of Thanksgiving and the first weekend of December. Families can come and pick their tree out and cut them down. In the future, we hope to create more of a Winter Wonderland experience for families to come and enjoy.
I would say the thing that sets us a part is our customer service as well as our trees are high quality.
At the end of the day, we’re not just growing Christmas trees. We’re growing traditions. It’s a blessing to work together as a family and help other families create memories that will last long after the ornaments are packed away. That is what we are most proud of.

What has been the most important lesson you’ve learned along your journey?
Practically lift with your knees 😉 There are years spent planting, pruning, mowing, and caring for each tree before it ever ends up in someone’s home. We are learning to enjoy the process even when it is tough. Thankfully we love what we do and even more who we do it with.
