Today we’d like to introduce you to Russell.
Russell, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I grew up in Virginia Beach. I got my first surfboard when I was 7 years old and I made my first surfboard when I was 15. I competed in my first contest when I was 10 and I won my first contest when I was 15. My favorite place to surf on the East Coast is Rodanthe. I moved to San Diego and opened up my first surf shop when I was 21. It was called Point Loma Surf Shop. I held my first surf contest at Imperial Beach in 1999. I lived on the North Shore of Hawaii from Winter of 94/95 through Winterof 96/97.. I have taken surf trips to Brazil, Venezuela, Mexico, Hawaii, Spain, and France. I have taken several trips to Popoyo Nicaragua. I now own South Beach Surf Shop in Newport Oregon where I have lived for the past six years.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
I have had a lot of injuries along the way.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I teach people how to look at the ocean and understand what’s going on…I then teach them how to surf… 1st paddle the board correctly…sit on the board correctly…then how to read the waves and which ones to choose…there is a routine to surfing and the exercises I teach create muscle memory for proper technique. I also up-cycle old surfboards into beach house and commercial art.
