Today we’d like to introduce you to Emmah Morgan.
Hi Emmah, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
My love for photography began during a study abroad trip to Ecuador while attending Colorado State University. I was pursuing a degree in Fisheries Conservation. I carried my first camera with me everywhere; capturing frogs, turtles, and all the incredible wildlife the Amazon Rainforest had to offer. When I returned to Colorado, I started taking senior photos for friends just for fun, and quickly realized how much I loved being behind the camera.
A couple of years after graduating, my now-husband and I moved to the Oregon Coast for my career in fisheries science. While the work was incredibly rewarding, I found myself missing a creative outlet and began photographing families and couples for friends whenever I had the chance. What started as a passion project slowly grew into something much bigger.
Three years later, I am so grateful to have built Shots By Em Photography and to have had the privilege of capturing countless couples, families, pets, elopements, and weddings along the Oregon Coast and beyond. I can’t imagine doing anything else!
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Growing my business has come with its fair share of challenges, just like the best things in life often do. One of the biggest hurdles I’ve faced has been the seasonality of the Oregon Coast. Many of my clients visit during the busy summer months, and things tend to slow down significantly after September. To adapt, I offer travel packages for weddings outside of Oregon and have invested in waterproof camera gear so we can embrace the rain instead of letting it stop us. Some of those rainy day sessions have turned out to be my absolute favorites!
Another challenge has been discovering and trusting my own style. I’m passionate about capturing authentic, candid moments rather than stiff, overly posed photos. My favorite sessions are the ones where my clients feel so comfortable that they barely notice I’m there. When I first started, I was given the advice to choose one niche and make it my specialty. Over time, I realized that I don’t have to fit into just one category. I genuinely love photographing everything from weddings and elopements, to senior portraits- and thats ok!
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
Shots By Em is incredibly special to me. I’m a completely self-taught photographer based on the Oregon Coast, where I live with my husband and our two dogs, Oli and Fridge. I’ve always loved photography and the ability it gives me to preserve authentic moments. The Oregon Coast is a very special place to do that.
I specialize in weddings, elopements, couples, families, surprise proposals, and portraits. One of the things I love most about photography is that there is always something new to learn. I’m constantly looking for ways to challenge myself, grow creatively, and continue evolving both as a photographer and as a person.
When I’m not behind the camera, you’ll usually find me hiking, running, baking, or taking care of my growing collection of plants. I also have a small fish-inspired embroidery business. No matter what I’m creating, I’m passionate about celebrating the little things that make life beautiful, and I feel incredibly lucky to share that passion with my clients.
