darrin, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
My passion for architecture began at an early age and grew through years of hands-on experience in residential design. After working in the industry and seeing firsthand how thoughtful design can shape the way people live, I founded Hollyman Design with a simple goal: to create homes that are both timeless and deeply personal.
Today, I specialize in high-end custom homes throughout Central Oregon and beyond, working closely with clients to design homes that complement their lifestyle, the surrounding landscape, and the character of each property. Every project starts with listening—understanding how a family lives, entertains, and envisions their future—before translating those ideas into a home that is both beautiful and highly functional.
What continues to drive me is the opportunity to help clients create something truly unique. Seeing a home evolve from an idea on paper into a place where families build lasting memories is the most rewarding part of what I do.
My career in residential architecture spans more than 20 years, most of which I spent with one of Central Oregon’s premier design-build firms, where I had the opportunity to design and develop high-end custom homes throughout the region. Those years provided invaluable experience working directly with clients, builders, and craftsmen to create homes that are both beautiful and highly functional.
In addition to my design work, I served as the consulting architect for the design review process at Brasada Ranch, one of Central Oregon’s premier gated communities. That role gave me a unique perspective on balancing architectural creativity with community design standards while helping preserve the character and quality of the neighborhood.
After two decades in the industry, I founded Hollyman Design to provide a more personal, client-focused approach to custom home design. Today, I specialize in luxury custom homes throughout Central Oregon and beyond, collaborating closely with clients to create homes that reflect their lifestyle, the surrounding landscape, and their long-term vision.
What I enjoy most is building relationships with clients and guiding them through the process of turning an idea into a home that is uniquely theirs. Every project is different, and that’s what continues to inspire me every day.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Starting my own business was incredibly rewarding, but it certainly wasn’t without challenges. After spending more than 20 years with an established firm, I was leaving behind the security of a well-known company to build a brand from the ground up. Like many entrepreneurs, I had to earn the trust of new clients, establish relationships, and prove myself all over again.
One of the more unexpected challenges was realizing that not everyone would support the decision to start my own business. Some long-standing relationships changed, and a few friendships faded along the way. While that was difficult, it also reinforced the importance of surrounding myself with people who believe in what I’m building.
Looking back, those experiences helped shape both my business and my perspective. They taught me resilience, the value of perseverance, and the importance of staying true to my vision. Every challenge has made Hollyman Design stronger, and today I’m grateful for the opportunity to work with clients who appreciate thoughtful design and the personal attention that comes with a boutique architectural practice.

Networking and finding a mentor can have such a positive impact on one’s life and career. Any advice?
One of the best pieces of advice I can give is to never stop learning. Throughout my career, I’ve learned something from nearly everyone I’ve worked with—clients, builders, tradespeople, engineers, and fellow designers. A mentor doesn’t always have to be one person. Sometimes it’s the collective wisdom of the people you meet along the way.
When it comes to networking, I’ve found that genuine relationships are far more valuable than simply collecting contacts. Be dependable, communicate well, follow through on your commitments, and always be willing to help others. Your reputation is one of the most valuable assets you’ll ever have, and over time, that reputation will often open more doors than any marketing campaign.
For me, the most meaningful opportunities have come through trust and long-term relationships. Focus on doing exceptional work, treat people with respect, and be patient. Success doesn’t happen overnight, but consistency, integrity, and a commitment to excellence have been the foundation of both my career and **hollyman design**.
