Today we’d like to introduce you to Henry Ryals.
Hi Henry, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
As the son of an Architect, I’ve lived and breathed construction all my life. Some of my earliest memories are of job site tours (complete with a hard hat that was comically oversized for my little head) and of helping my dad with home renovation projects. Throughout my childhood, weekends and summers were spent working on our home or rental property. After graduating High School I attended one year of Music School at PSU before deciding that the music life wasn’t for me.
I entered the construction trades at 21 and haven’t looked back since. At the age of 27 I graduated from the Pacific Northwest Carpenters Institute and completed my apprenticeship in the United Brotherhood of Carpenters. Upon receiving my brass Journeyman card I got my general contractor license and went into business for myself. In these last four years I’ve learned and worked more than at any point in my life, and we’ve grown to two full time crews of carpenters and served dozens upon dozens of thrilled clients.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
About half of construction companies go out of business in their first two years of business. After 10 years the failure rate is close to 95%. Whether it’s sloppy bookkeeping, ineffective marketing, or failures in the building process, pitfalls abound. While we struggled with profitability in our early days, we’ve always maintained unbeatable quality and service without exception. After persevering through slow times and financial loss we are now blessed to have a ton of amazing clients while paying a fair, family wage to our craftsmen.
As you know, we’re big fans of Ryals Design Build, LLC. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about the brand?
We are a residential construction company specializing in custom homes, additions and ADU’s. Our motto is “The Effortless way to an Extraordinary home” because we believe our clients deserve a beautiful, durable, and highly-functional home with a transparent and seamlessly-coordinated construction process! We provide complete design drawings, coordinate all engineering & permitting and construct all projects with our team of craftsmen and specialty contractors. Our clients so enjoy working with us, that they often have us return again to build yet another project!
Where we are in life is often partly because of others. Who/what else deserves credit for how your story turned out?
I have been blessed by too many people to name, but there are a few who must be mentioned. First and foremost are my parents Bill and Pam, who have always believed in and supported me. As well, the mentorship I’ve received from my dad is too great put a price on.
Secondly, I would not be here without the absolute loyalty and tireless work of my top craftsmen, Zac Romancier and Elijah Garza. Their commitment to our vision has made our success possible.
Thirdly I credit my wife, Susie. Her unwavering belief in me has given me the confidence to grow our business and pursue new opportunities, and her charm and charisma has exponentially grown our network.
