Today we’d like to introduce you to Mitty McVay.
Hi Mitty, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
We are a husband and wife team and have been in the business in feeding folks in one way or another for the past 15 years. We met working on an organic vegetable farm in Colorado in 2012, and have worked together in fields and kitchens all over the western half of the US ever since.
Tackle Box Burrito is our second entrepreneurial adventure. We owned and operated a diversified vegetable and meat chicken, organic practice farm in Williams, OR from 2014-2016.
We absolutely love food and the joy and community that is always associated with providing sustenance.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
We have been very lucky to find a good deal of success this first year in business with Tackle Box Burrito. A combination of lucky moves– finding our people at the Astoria Sunday Market and The Lot Astoria, for example — and very hard work have paid off for us this year.
We have had only a couple misses when it comes to avenues we have tried that did not really work out. A few events that we learned were just not our target audience or the right fit due to time of day, location, etc.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
Tackle Box Burrito was conceived as an affordable, convenient, and hearty breakfast/lunch option for fisherfolk headed out for a long day on the river/sea. Our extra large breakfast burritos can be thrown into your tackle box and provide enough food for the day. Half for breakfast, half for lunch or one big breakfast so that you can focus on the catch for the rest of the day.
Our commercial/mixed use property sits just blocks from the Hammond Marina, and the concept was an easy stop for Buoy 10 season fishers on their way out for the day. Our original location plan didn’t quite pan out as we launched in August of 2025, and for now we can be found at The Lot Astoria (across from City Hall on 11th and Duane) Wednesday – Saturday, 6 am – 2 pm, and at the Astoria Sunday Market on Sundays, Mother’s Day – mid-October.
Our fishing themed menu still appeals to our Astoria clientele. Folks on their way to work or looking to fuel their market day or Astoria tourist adventure love our offerings.
All of our burritos come with crispy potatoes, cheddar and Monterey Jack cheeses, and fluffy garlic infused scrambled eggs. From there you can choose between tri-tip steak, seriously thick bacon, chorizo, smoked ham, or black beans. Each protein is paired with a house made sauce that complements the flavor profile of the protein.
Our dream is to grow into a full size food cart where we can expand our offerings. If you have seen “the box,” you can see that the space does not allow for much more than our carefully curated breakfast burrito offerings. But one day we look forward to offering further culinary delights to our customers.
What quality or characteristic do you feel is most important to your success?
Adaptability has definitely been our most important value. The logistics of this business have had to shift multiple times already in our first year, and our ability to change course quickly has been key. We have operated under the “see a need, fill a need” mentality and will continue to do so as our community grows and changes.
