Daily Inspiration: Meet Brian Keary

Today we’d like to introduce you to Brian Keary.

Hi Brian, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
Education: University of Wisconsin-Green Bay (December 1992)

Upon graduation, I ventured into the realm of programming as a freelancer, proficiently navigating through languages such as Fortran, HTML and CSS, although their relevance in today’s technological landscape has significantly changed. My insatiable thirst for knowledge led me to self-teach these new updated plus search engine optimization (SEO), achieving certification annually since 2002. I now reside in Ontario, Oregon, where I continue to innovate and create exceptional web solutions for clients worldwide.

In 2003 I started working on building WordPress themes and plugins. I did this for a number of years all the while continuing my SEO practice. In 2014 I got a request to build a Shopify theme and, while I was hesitant at first, agreed to build the theme. One of the best decisions of my life.

With an unwavering passion for programming, I constantly strive for innovation and refuse to settle for mediocrity. My determination often leads me to explore unique styles and functionalities, resulting in projects that truly stand out and captivate.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Running a small business is never a smooth road. If you reside in a large city you have countless others to compete with. All claim to do the same thing. Many of whom, are very good at marketing, not the truth.

Small towns bring the obstacle of not enough business, but little competition. Hiring in small towns is a huge challenge. So much so, that I even went with remote workers for a while. That brought challenges in that dealines were being missed, work was not up to par. Some of the remote workers were in different time zones and made communication a huge challenge, I eventually found a few local people and trained them. This was a smart move in the long run, although it was slow starting out.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I run the digital marketing agency BKThemes. I am proud to be rated 4.98 stars with over 1000 reviews and testimonials over my 30+ year career. I have won many awards including best Shopify SEO company in Oregon 2025, Top Firm on 50 Pros and countless others over the years.

I never settle for “looks good”. If I don’t “wow” myself I keep working. When it comes to SEO, I was the first in the area to adopt AI and saw the search landscaping changing and altered how I did business. This has given me a huge head start above competitors and all my clients are benefiting from it.
