Rising Stars: Meet Kelsea Crouter of Oregon

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kelsea Crouter.

Hi Kelsea, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I was diagnosed with celiac disease at a very young age. Growing up in the early 2000s, there were very few gluten-free options available, and most of them tasted nothing like the foods everyone else got to enjoy. Living with celiac disease wasn’t just about following a gluten-free diet—it often meant feeling different and left out.

One of my earliest memories is attending birthday parties where all the other kids would enjoy cake together while I was handed a separate gluten-free cookie or cupcake from a package that my mom had specially bought for me. Although it was a kind gesture, it always reminded me that I was different. Those experiences stayed with me throughout my childhood and shaped the way I think about food today.

Despite those challenges, I have always loved baking. My passion began with my Easy-Bake Oven when I was a little girl, and from that moment on, I found so much joy in creating desserts and sharing them with others.

After graduating from Astoria High School, I attended college in Portland and earned my degree in Criminal Justice. I later moved back home and began my career as a corrections deputy at the sheriff’s office. I spent four years in a career that I truly loved. It was challenging, rewarding, and something I poured my heart into every day.

In 2024, while pregnant with my son, I faced one of the most difficult decisions of my life. After many conversations about childcare costs, scheduling conflicts, and balancing two demanding careers with my husband I made the choice to leave the career I had worked so hard to build and become a stay-at-home mom. Although I still miss my job, becoming a mom to my son, Sylus, has been the greatest blessing and the most rewarding role I have ever had.

After about six months of being home, I realized I was missing something. My life had gone from working long 12-16 hour unpredictable shifts in a fast-paced environment to being home every day. As much as I loved motherhood, I needed a creative outlet and something that challenged me outside of my daily routine.

I was already baking every week simply because I loved it, so I decided to take that passion to the next level. I immersed myself in learning the science behind gluten-free baking, and I quickly discovered that it is an entirely different craft than traditional baking. It requires different techniques, ingredients, and a great deal of patience, testing, and creativity.

What began as a hobby soon became a passion, and that passion became Kay’s Sweet Kitchen.

Shortly after starting Kay’s Sweet Kitchen, I found a cabinet on Facebook Marketplace and transformed it into a charming little farm stand in downtown Astoria. With a little paint, wallpaper, a lot of love, and some help from my husband, it became something truly special. What started as a simple idea has grown into a popular weekend destination where the community can stop by for fresh, homemade gluten-free treats.

One of my favorite parts of running my business is creating a new menu each week, filled with cookies, bars, cakes, muffins, and other delicious goodies. It allows me to be creative while giving my customers something new to look forward to.

I feel incredibly blessed to be part of a community that values and supports small businesses. I’ve met so many wonderful customers, and nothing makes me happier than seeing familiar faces return week after week. Receiving messages like, “What time are you opening tomorrow?” or “I need to get there before everything sells out!” reminds me just how much people enjoy what I create.

The support I’ve received has been more than I ever imagined, and I’m already at the point where I’m dreaming of a bigger farm stand to keep up with demand. I am beyond grateful for everyone who has supported Kay’s Sweet Kitchen from the very beginning. I can’t wait to continue growing my business, creating new recipes, and baking for this amazing community for years to come.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
The Astoria community has been incredibly supportive and has made the journey of starting my business such a rewarding experience. When I first launched Kay’s Sweet Kitchen, I shared my business in several local Facebook groups, and the response was overwhelming. The encouragement and support from my community helped my business grow, and today I am grateful to have so many loyal, repeat customers who continue to support my dream.

one of my biggest challenges is recipe development. Gluten-free baking is truly a science, requiring careful testing, precise ingredient combinations, and plenty of trial and error. I often feel more like a scientist than a baker as I experiment to achieve the perfect texture and flavor. Much of my inspiration comes from traditional gluten-based recipes, which I thoughtfully redevelop from the ground up to create gluten-free versions that look, taste, and feel just as delicious as the originals.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I am a home baker specializing in handcrafted gluten-free baked goods. My mission is to create desserts that are every bit as delicious as their traditional counterparts. I don’t want people to describe my products as “good for gluten-free”—I want them to take a bite and simply enjoy them without ever questioning that they’re gluten-free. If someone says, “I never would have known this was gluten-free,” then I’ve achieved exactly what I set out to do.

There’s something so satisfying about whipping up treats that match the vibe of the season or a special occasion. Imagine biting into a light, fruity dessert in summer, then cozying up with a warm, spiced pastry in the fall – it’s all about capturing those holiday feels in every delicious bite!

In addition to gluten-free baking, I also specialize in custom dipped treats for birthdays, weddings, baby showers, holidays, and other special occasions. I create and decorate cake pops, Rice crispy treats, and chocolate-dipped Oreos, customizing each order to match my customers’ themes, colors, and celebrations.

Creating custom treats has become one of my favorite parts of my business. It has allowed me to discover a creative side of myself that I never knew I had. While I never considered myself particularly artistic growing up, designing and decorating each order has become a meaningful way to express my creativity while bringing joy to others through beautiful, personalized desserts

In terms of your work and the industry, what are some of the changes you are expecting to see over the next five to ten years?
My goal is to continue growing my family and stay home with my children until they begin school. My dream is to build Kay’s Sweet Kitchen into a thriving business that provides a steady income, allowing me to continue doing what I love while supporting my family.

I know there is still so much to learn, and I am committed to researching, testing, and perfecting new recipes to ensure every product is the best it can be. My hope is to continue improving, creating baked goods that make my customers happy, and growing my business one step at a time. With hard work and dedication, I hope to become more established in my community, expand my customer base, and build a successful business that allows me to pursue my passion while providing for my family.
