Today we’d like to introduce you to Tammy Fuhrman.
Hi Tammy, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
It all started with my own journey, finding health, fitness and happiness for myself. I struggled with my weight and health as long as I can remember. Then my dad died, my world shattered and I got the heaviest and most unhealthy I had ever been. I coped with food and pretended that I loved myself the way I was no matter what. But I didn’t. I was unhappy with myself, my anxiety was at its peak and I didn’t like what I saw. I decided enough was enough. I started cycling class and was really enjoying it when Covid hit. But I decided not to let that hold me back. I started running, I did at home workouts, I got a bike for home. Finally at the end of 2020 I got invited to do CrossFit with friends out of a garage gym. That’s when my life changed for real. Friends kept me accountable and in a routine. And lifting weights changed my life. With every bit of strength I built, I gained confidence in myself, completely resolved my anxiety, and improved my outlook on life. It changed my mindset in that I knew I could do anything I set my mind to if I worked for it. It gave me the ability to believe in myself. Fast forward a couple years and my workout routine was better than ever, I had structure, I was eating better, I had lost 65lbs and kept it off. My only wish was that I knew all of this years ago! That I had been educated on nutrition and strength training in my youth. That’s when I had friends noticing the changes in me, and asking for help to do the same. At first I was sure I wouldn’t be a coach but was happy to pass on any knowledge I could to others. It made all the difference in my life and I wanted to share that, but me a coach? I didn’t think so. After around 6 months of helping others and really thinking it though I decided to take a leap. I decided that if I am this passionate about my own health, I was the right person to help others find their passion. It only takes one person to believe in you to make the difference. And I am lucky enough to have many, my husband, my training partner and best friend, my family and now a whole community. And thus BFF Fitness was born. BFF because this gym is more than a workout but a friendship. But also BFF stands for Built From Food, because in order to build muscle in the gym we have to fuel ourselves outside of it! The gym has turned into so much more than I could have dreamt. It is small but we are a family. Everybody knows everybody and we are there for each other through thick and thin. It is my happy place.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Having a business always has its struggles, but luckily I haven’t had too many hardships. My biggest Challenge was starting. Getting classes to have members and providing value to keep coming back.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
We specialize is functional fitness. I really like to focus on strength being a huge component to health, but we can’t forget that conditioning is so important for the heart. The workouts are not necessarily special in that a lot of gyms have these type of classes but we stand apart by being small, so we can give really hands on instruction. I believe scaling everyone to where they are or need that day is so important. So we can all live to lift another day. But I think I am most proud of the community that we have built. That anyone can walk in and be welcomed. That anyone can start and will be encouraged to keep trying. That everyone that shows up will be supported inside the gym and out. That we are a safe space to have feelings, good days, bad days and all the in between.
Do you have any advice for those just starting out?
My advice to anything new is to just start! That applies to everything. You want to start a new career? Find a new job or class you can take. You want to learn how to lift weights? Go to your first class. You want to open a business? Do it! The only way we learn and the only way we get better is by doing it. Put in the work, learn from mistakes, listen to others and believe in yourself! There is room for everyone! Don’t limit yourself by second guessing. Everyone has to start from the beginning so it’s never too late for you to!
