Exploring Life & Business with Megan And Michael Newton of M&M Petcare

Today we’d like to introduce you to Megan And Michael Newton.

Hi Megan and Michael , so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
M&M Petcare started in 2018, when my husband Michael and I decided to turn our love of animals into something of our own. What began as a local pet care business gradually became something much more meaningful to us.

Over the years, we’ve cared for so many different dogs and cats, and many of the relationships we’ve built have lasted for years. That’s probably the part of the business I’m proudest of. When you regularly care for someone’s pet, you really get to know them – their personality, routines, quirks, what makes them excited, and what makes them feel comfortable & safe.

Today, M&M Petcare provides professional dog walking, drop-in visits, cat sitting, adventure walks, and pet sitting in Tigard, Beaverton, Lake Oswego, and SW Portland. We’re insured and bonded and Pet CPR & First Aid certified. We’ve always wanted the business to feel personal rather than just transactional. We’re a local business, not an app, and our clients know who is coming into their home and caring for their pets.

Building a business has definitely had its ups and downs, and we’ve learned a lot along the way, but eight years later we’re incredibly grateful that we get to make a living caring for animals and helping people feel comfortable knowing their pets are being genuinely cared for while they’re away or at work.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
It definitely hasn’t always been a smooth road. One of the biggest lessons we have learned is how unpredictable running a service-based business can be. Clients move, change jobs, schedules change, or their circumstances shift, sometimes all within a short period of time.

COVID was probably our biggest challenge. Suddenly, people weren’t commuting or traveling, which greatly affected the pet care industry. It forced us to adapt to circumstances completely outside of our control.

We’ve also learned that loving animals is only one part of running a pet care business. There’s scheduling, marketing, finances, customer service, and countless decisions behind the scenes. After eight years, we’ve learned that business naturally has seasons, and the challenging ones often push us to adapt and ultimately make M&M Petcare stronger.

Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
Pet owners come to M&M Petcare because they want to know their pets are genuinely cared for when they can’t be there. Whether they’re working a long day, working from home, navigating mobility issues, or in a busy season of life they just want their pet to have more exercise and enrichment, our job is to make their lives easier while giving their pets consistency, companionship, and individualized care.

We’ve experienced firsthand how much regular care and a consistent routine can positively affect a pet’s happiness and well-being. Over time, we get to know each animal’s personality, habits, preferences, and needs, which allows us to build real relationships with the pets in our care.

We’re insured and bonded, Pet CPR & First Aid certified, and have been serving Tigard, Lake Oswego, and SW Portland since 2018. We provide professional dog walking, drop-in visits, cat sitting, adventure walks, and pet sitting, along with GPS-tracked visits, photos, and detailed updates.

What we’re most proud of is the trust we’ve built with our clients. They know exactly who is entering their home and caring for their pets, and they can go about their day knowing someone experienced and dependable is there for an important member of their family.

What makes you happy?
We’re happiest spending time with our two cats, being outdoors, and spending time with the dogs and cats we care for through M&M Petcare. We both love hiking and being in nature, but we’re equally happy curling up at home and finding a great Netflix show.

We’re also both creative in different ways. Megan has a BA in English Literature and loves reading, while Michael graduated from the Art Institute and enjoys drawing. For us, happiness is really a combination of animals, creativity, nature, and enjoying our time together.
