Today we’d like to introduce you to Benjamin.
Hi Benjamin, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
I was born in Athens, Greece. I was there until the age of five. We then moved near Bordeaux, in a little town called La Brède. In the South Western part of France. I then moved to San Francisco in 2004 to find new opportunities and enjoy a new scenery. Then onto Oregon right before my first son was born. And here we are, my son Louca, age eight, and Dana, age six. My wife Sarah now works for the Forest Grove school district after spending the last six years and a school teacher in a Waldorf school.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
This Journey is so new that I haven’t hit any real hardships as of yet. Finding clients is my current challenge.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I have done a lot of different jobs in my life! It started in the south of France, school was a challenge for me and I quickly realized that a “regular” path wasn’t for me.
I started a formation in a culinary institution and after a year, realized that wasn’t for me. I have a passion for cooking but I didn’t see that as a career path. I then went thru a formation in auto-body work and painting and started working in a shop. Then again, this wasn’t for me.
I moved to the United States at the age of 20 to seek new opportunities. I have some family here and my cousins took me in and allowed me to live with them in San Francisco where I worked in various restaurants like Tow Hall and Kokkari amongst many others.
I then decided to become an EMT and went thru the required training. I really enjoyed it but shortly after getting certified, I realized that there was no way for me to support myself with those kind of wages in a city like SF.
I went back into hospitality for a while where I met my wife Sarah. When she got pregnant, we moved to Oregon to start a new life and raise our two boys.
Here, I started working for UPS and have been until May of last year. I tore my lumbar muscle on the job and went on disability. This is when I decided to launch OMS.
Who else deserves credit in your story?
My parents helped throughout life, always there to offer any kind of support during the hard times. My mother in law has been also helping for the past five years with child care. We couldn’t have made it without her.
