Today we’d like to introduce you to Rich Martin.
Hi Rich, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
My journey started in the food industry, it just didn’t support a small family, so I needed to do something bigger.
After leaving Southern Oregon to join the U.S. Navy, I became a respiratory therapist and eventually worked in adult, pediatric, and neonatal critical care. I spent years helping patients through some of the hardest moments of their lives, later teaching healthcare professionals and training physicians and respiratory therapists across the country.
Like many in healthcare, 2020 changed everything. Working through the pandemic exposed problems that went far beyond individual patient care. When I returned to Oregon, I realized many of the challenges I cared about were structural. They couldn’t be solved by one respiratory therapist. That realization, along with service-connected mental health challenges from years in critical care, led me to step away from healthcare and complete my MSEd and MBA at Southern Oregon University.
My first entrepreneurial venture was Three Little Peppers Sauce Co. What started as a hobby growing peppers and making hot sauce quickly became a lesson in business. I could generate attention and demand, but I couldn’t scale commercially without the right infrastructure. Production, compliance, packaging, distribution, and capital all became barriers.
That experience led directly to Rogue Media Solutions. I realized the same infrastructure problems I faced were holding back countless small businesses. So instead of simply building websites or running marketing campaigns, I focused on helping local businesses build digital assets they actually own; strong websites, local SEO, Google Business Profiles, analytics, and systems that create long-term growth instead of temporary visibility.
As Rogue Media Solutions grew, so did the relationships it created throughout Southern Oregon. Those connections eventually led to projects like The Meltdown, a gourmet grilled cheese business built around community, collaboration, and supporting men’s mental health, as well as continuing to develop Three Little Peppers Sauce Co. and Martin Family Farms.
Looking back, every step prepared me for the next. Healthcare taught me service. The pandemic taught me the importance of resilient systems. The hot sauce business taught me the realities of scaling. Rogue Media Solutions became the foundation that connected everything together.
Today, my mission is simple: build businesses that strengthen the local economy, create opportunities for others, and leave Southern Oregon better than I found it.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Definitely not. Like most entrepreneurs, I’ve had my share of setbacks, but many of my biggest challenges happened before I ever started a business.
Leaving healthcare was one of the hardest decisions I’ve ever made. It wasn’t just a career change; it was walking away from an identity I had spent years building. Between working in critical care, serving during the COVID-19 pandemic, and navigating service-connected PTSD, I had to completely rethink what success looked like.
When I started my first business, Three Little Peppers Sauce Co., I learned that having a great product isn’t enough. Scaling a food business requires significant capital, regulatory compliance, commercial production, and distribution. I realized I needed to build a stronger foundation before I could bring that vision to life.
Starting Rogue Media Solutions came with a different set of challenges. Building trust in an industry where many small businesses have been burned by marketing companies isn’t easy. I’ve had to prove that our philosophy is different; that businesses should own their websites, understand their marketing, and invest in long-term assets instead of quick fixes. That takes time, education, and patience.
The biggest lesson has been learning that failure isn’t always a signal to stop. Sometimes it’s just information telling you to change direction. Three Little Peppers didn’t fail; it redirected me toward building Rogue Media Solutions. Rogue Media Solutions introduced me to people and opportunities that eventually led to projects like The Meltdown and other community partnerships. Looking back, many of the things that felt like setbacks at the time ended up becoming the reason the next opportunity existed.
Entrepreneurship has also taught me that no one builds anything worthwhile alone. The relationships I’ve developed throughout Southern Oregon, with other business owners, nonprofits, community leaders, and friends, have become just as valuable as any business plan. Those connections have carried me through difficult seasons and continually remind me that success is something you build together.
Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about Rogue Media Solutions?
Rogue Media Solutions exists to help small businesses build something they actually own.
The marketing industry often pushes businesses toward renting their success through ads, proprietary platforms, or agencies that control everything. We take the opposite approach. Our philosophy is that your website, your data, your search presence, and your reputation should belong to you. We build the infrastructure first; professional websites, local SEO, Google Business Profiles, analytics, schema, and long-term digital strategies that continue creating value long after a campaign ends.
What makes us different is that we don’t see marketing as a collection of services. We see it as a trust system.
Every business relationship should create value for everyone involved. We intentionally connect clients with one another, promote local collaboration, and help businesses grow together rather than compete in isolation. That network has become one of our greatest strengths.
The best example is The Meltdown. What started as an idea became a fully operating business in just a matter of weeks. We didn’t accomplish that because we had a massive marketing budget; we accomplished it because years of building trust throughout Southern Oregon created a network of people willing to support the vision. Local businesses contributed, community members became Founders, partners volunteered their expertise, and thousands of people followed the story as it unfolded. The marketing wasn’t just advertisements; it was authentic relationships that had been built long before the business ever opened.
That’s what I’m most proud of. Rogue Media Solutions has become more than a marketing company. It’s an ecosystem that helps launch businesses, strengthen nonprofits, connect entrepreneurs, and keep more opportunities circulating within our local economy.
Whether we’re helping a contractor rank on Google, launching a food truck, supporting a nonprofit fundraiser, or telling the story of a local farm, the mission stays the same: build trust first. The marketing becomes much easier when people genuinely believe in what you’re creating.
Is there anyone you’d like to thank or give credit to?
Absolutely. While I’ve started several businesses, none of them were built alone.
First and foremost is my wife, Rachel. She has supported every pivot, every late night, every crazy idea, and every setback along the way. Entrepreneurship affects the whole family, and I couldn’t do any of this without her believing in the vision.
The Southern Oregon business community also deserves a tremendous amount of credit. One of the things that has surprised me most is how willing local business owners are to help each other succeed when someone shows up consistently and genuinely wants to contribute. Organizations like the Grants Pass & Josephine County Chamber of Commerce, Dr. Kim Freeze, Terry Hopkins, the team at Rogue Produce, The Rogue Valley Food System Network, and countless networking groups introduced me to people who became clients, collaborators, and friends.
I’m especially grateful to Nik Martin, whose creativity and ability to tell a story helped bring The Meltdown to life. Watching people take ownership of something bigger than themselves has been one of the most rewarding parts of the journey.
I’m also thankful to the dozens of local businesses that chose to trust Rogue Media Solutions. Every client gave us the opportunity to prove that marketing could be done differently; with transparency, education, and long-term thinking. That trust became the foundation for everything that followed.
I’m incredibly proud of what we’ve built, but I’m even more grateful for the people who chose to build it with us.
