Today we’d like to introduce you to Lorie Deller.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
In 2012, I was living in East Texas, earning my Bachelors degree in Fine Arts, when I met a talented, professional face-painter who trained me as one of her artists. I painted at birthday parties, festivals, and celebrations of all kinds, while finishing school, and I instantly fell in love with the joy and connection that this art form brings to children AND adults. I opened Daydreams Face Painting in 2023, in Ashland, Oregon, but you don’t have to come to me; I drive to where your event is! I carry a canopy, a table, chairs, and all the supplies I’ll need to bring your daydreams to life!
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
I went back to school for my BFA a little later in life, which was challenging as a mother of a young child, as well as having to work. I found a way to balance things out each day, and eventually, graduation day came. Later, I wasn’t sure I had what it would take to run a business of my own, but sometimes, you just have to ignore the self-doubt and move forward with it.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
Professional face-painting is an interactive, face-to-face artistic experience. I think it’s very important to keep this type of connection happening in the age of social media and AI, for the sake of balance.
I describe myself as an observational artist, which means that I can look at an image and paint what I see on my canvas (or face) with accuracy. My favorite thing is to take a guest’s request and turn it into a magical reaction in the mirror.
Where do you see things going in the next 5-10 years?
Having a face-painter at an event will draw more people every time. I’ve noticed that there are some crowded events that I’ve done where it’s difficult to keep up with the line. Don’t get me wrong, building patience in young people is important, but you don’t want anyone growing cobwebs while waiting, and I don’t want to start slapping on sloppy designs to quicken the queue. This is why I am considering hiring a line manager, and perhaps another artist. As for now, I limit the choices to a few popular designs while it’s really busy.
