Rising Stars: Meet Judith Cunningham of National

Today we’d like to introduce you to Judith Cunningham.

Hi Judith, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
My journey to where I am today began with a moment that changed my life by 200 percent. I was suddenly forced to be with myself in ways I had never imagined or understood. Everything I thought I knew about myself, my life, and the world around me began to shift.

At first, I didn’t understand what was happening. I only knew that something inside me was asking to be seen.

Looking back, I realize that I had always been deeply curious about things I couldn’t explain. When I was younger, I had experiences that didn’t fit neatly into the world I understood at the time. I learned to put those experiences aside and continue living my life. But they never completely disappeared.

Years later, as I was learning to open my heart and truly experience love… not just as something I could give to others, but as something I could allow myself to receive… I unknowingly opened another door.

That door led me back to myself.

And it also led me back to those parts of my past I had never fully understood.

I dove deeply into that space, exploring my experiences, my emotions, my intuition, my relationships, and the many layers of what it means to be human. What I found was a much greater truth than I could have imagined: so much of what we search for outside of ourselves is already waiting to be discovered within us.

My own journey of healing eventually became the foundation for the work I do today.

Through HeartMath, sound healing, meditation, and other heart-centered practices, I began learning how powerful it can be when we create space to slow down, listen inward, and reconnect with ourselves. I became a certified HeartMath practitioner and sound healer, and eventually founded Balancing A Loving Life LLC to share these experiences with others.

Writing became another part of that process. My book, Life Is My PhD, came from looking back at my life and recognizing that every experience, especially the ones I once wished had been different, had something to teach me.

Power Thesaurus grew from my understanding that the words we use shape the way we experience our lives. Sometimes changing the language around an experience allows us to see an entirely different possibility within it.

Today, I don’t see my journey as a story about having overcome everything. I see it as an ongoing invitation to discover more of who I am, to remain curious, to stay open to love, and to trust what life continues to reveal.

The greatest lesson has been that healing isn’t necessarily about becoming someone new. Sometimes it is about becoming willing to meet the deepest parts of who you have always been.

And that is what I now love helping other people do.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Absolutely not. My road has been anything but smooth, and I think that is part of what ultimately gave me the ability to do the work I do today.

One of my biggest challenges has been learning to let go of the need to understand everything before moving forward. I have always been someone who wants to find the meaning in things, but there were chapters when the answers simply weren’t available to me. I had to learn patience, trust, and the willingness to keep going even when I couldn’t see where the road was leading.

There were also times when choosing to live authentically meant outgrowing people, beliefs, expectations, and versions of myself that had once felt familiar. That process can be incredibly liberating, but it can also be lonely. Growth doesn’t always feel like growth while you’re going through it.

Building a life and a business around something so personal has brought its own challenges as well. Putting my work and my heart into the world requires vulnerability. It means allowing myself to be seen, continuing to believe in what I offer, and learning that I don’t have to have everything perfectly figured out to take the next step.

What has helped me most is learning not to view difficulty as evidence that I’m on the wrong path. Sometimes life simply asks us to become stronger, more honest, more compassionate, or more willing to trust ourselves.

I have learned to stop asking, “Why is this happening to me?” and become more curious about, “What is this here to help me remember and become?”

That shift has changed the way I move through life.

Instead of continuing to push people and situations away, I dive deeper into them.

That journey required and still requires courage. It meant questioning what I believed, facing uncomfortable truths, allowing myself to feel things I had previously avoided, and learning to trust my own inner experience. There were certainly moments when I wished the journey were easier.

But eventually I began to see my challenges differently.

They weren’t obstacles standing between me and the life I wanted. They were invitations to know myself more deeply. Literally!

Every difficult chapter taught me something about resilience, love, forgiveness, compassion, and the incredible capacity we have to transform. I learned that healing isn’t about erasing the difficult parts of our story. It is about finding the meaning within them and allowing them to become part of our wisdom rather than the definition of who we are.

In many ways, the struggles I once thought were taking me away from my path were actually leading me directly toward it. They are my greatest opportunities in life!

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
My work is centered around one simple but powerful idea: creating space for people to reconnect with themselves, experience what becomes possible when we come back to the heart, and definitely helping people love the heck out of themselves.

Through Balancing A Loving Life LLC, I offer heart-centered experiences that bring together sound healing, HeartMath practices, meditation, breath, and intentional presence. I work with people privately, with couples and groups, and through larger community experiences, like our event at OMSI’s Planetarium. Each experience is different because each person and each group brings something completely unique into the space.

Sound is one of my primary tools. I work with a variety of healing instruments and frequencies to create an environment where people can slow down, quiet the outside world, and become more aware of what is happening within them. Combined with HeartMath practices, the experience becomes more than simply listening to beautiful sounds, it becomes an opportunity to cultivate connection, regulation, awareness, and a deeper relationship with oneself.

I am also deeply passionate about creating experiences that bring people together. Whether I am working with someone one-on-one, guiding a couple through a shared experience, or standing in front of a room filled with people, my intention is the same: to create a space where people feel safe enough to pause, feel, explore, and reconnect.

What I am most proud of is that my work is not something I created from a textbook or simply learned and began teaching. It has grown from my own life, my own questions, my own healing, and years of exploring what it means to live a more loving and conscious life. My experiences have taught me how important it is to meet people exactly where they are.

I think what sets me apart is the way I hold the whole experience. I don’t believe healing has to be complicated, and I don’t believe there is one formula that works for everyone. I bring knowledge, intuition, experience, and genuine human connection into the space, allowing the work to unfold organically.

Ultimately, I am most proud of the moments when someone leaves an experience feeling more connected to themselves than when they arrived. Those moments are why I continue doing this work.

What quality or characteristic do you feel is most important to your success?
Love. Without question.

Not love simply as an emotion, but as a way of moving through life.

Love has taught me to remain curious instead of judgmental, to listen before assuming, to look beneath what is immediately visible, and to see people as human beings rather than as the circumstances they are experiencing.

It has also taught me to keep questioning. I am incredibly curious. I want to understand why we feel what we feel, why we respond the way we do, what our bodies are communicating, what science can teach us, and also what exists beyond what we currently understand.

I don’t need to have all the answers. In fact, some of the most extraordinary discoveries in my life have come from being willing to say, “I don’t know, but I want to explore this.”

That combination of love and curiosity has shaped everything I do.

And perhaps most importantly, I try to live what I share with others. I don’t want love, compassion, gratitude, or authenticity to simply be things I speak about professionally. I want them to be visible in the way I live my life.

To me, that is success.
