Today we’d like to introduce you to Jax Alexander.
Hi Jax, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
For me, art has always been a part of my life. My father paints and makes collages. He also has made murals and cover art. Growing up art was always encouraged. But, I felt like i would never survive doing art, and it had to be just a hobby. But around 16 I realized, I could make it my livelihood.
I learned about the process for being a Tattoo artist in Oregon, and immediately started saving up for school. After graduating high school, I started working full time as a cook. I saved nearly every penny for a year to afford school. I was also constantly drawing, practicing, and researching tattoo shops in my local area. Finally, I was able to go to school for Tattooing.
After graduation, I found a shop. There, I was at the shop at least 40 hours a week, on top of part time work cooking. Taking any tattoo that walked through the doors. Eventually, I found my own style, and have started curating my clientele. Now, I know tattoo artists around the world, and my art has opened more doors for than I thought I ever could.
I can’t wait to see where life takes me next!
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
I would definitely say the road has been pretty bumpy. I grew up between two house holds. Constantly moving around and having to re settle again and again. There were moments where food scarcity was a genuine fear, and education became difficult. But, I turned out OK despite that thanks to the people I care about helping me through everything.
I also have been battling illness since I was a child. I had heart surgery at 16, and deal with chronic issues with my joints, heart, etc. I am in pain most days, but I don’t let that stop me. I do go too far sometimes, and need to take long breaks, but I am glad that I push myself. I wouldn’t be living the life I am now without it.
All of these struggles I have faced however, has continued to inspire me to be more. To grow stronger. And to hopefully one day have my art and words inspire others to do the same.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I am a Tattoo Artist currently working out of central Oregon. I currently specialize in black work and alternative realism tattoos. I am known for precise, detailed pieces and for being passionate about each tattoo I have done. I would say that I am most proud of myself for as coming as far as I have in a relatively short amount of time. I have been tattooing just over a year, and am researching expanding my business to prints, clothing, etc. What sets me apart? That’s a tricky question for me, as each artist is incredibly unique in their own way. I guess I would say my determination, how well I get along with people, and that I am never afraid to try anything at least once.
Can you talk to us a bit about happiness and what makes you happy?
Humanity. Art is the purest form of human connection in my eyes. Everything from painting to music to cooking. It is technically a “frivolous” act, but all humans love it. We create to communicate, express, and show each other we care. Humans are pretty cool for that. We have are shortcomings for sure, but I think when it comes down to who we are at our core, we simply desire connection. Art is how we do that. It breaks through boundaries and crosses borders, omits the need for language and is accessible to all. We all are humans, and we all are art. That is what inspires me most and brings me the most joy.
