Today we’d like to introduce you to Jennifer.
Hi Jennifer, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
When I was a little girl spending time with my Mexican Indigenous Grandma, she taught me about herbs and plants as teachers. Upon moving to Wapato Island( Sauvie Island), I knew that I wanted to tend land according to my people teachings. We now grow over a 100 different herbs, make medicines for community, and host Wapato Table.
Wapato Table Unschool is a long-term skill-sharing community that tends to the land, more-than-human kin, and the healing path. You will learn gentle ways of coexisting and trusting natural spaces to provide lasting relationships. We believe remembering, deep listening, and working with your hands counters the separation that intellectual study produces. Intuition and immersive experience provides a foundation for integral medicine-making paths. Wapato Table Unschool offers the opportunity for people who feel the call of the world to put their hands in the dirt, engage in ritual, and remember ancestral roots. Each of our community members have the blessing and responsibility to learn from growing medicine on a 10’x 10’ plot of land on Wapato Island Farm, optionally extending beyond the end of the cohort.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Unlearning the imperialist ways and thought processes that is produced through academia and remaining generous in a capitalist society is an immense challenge. Because we see the plants as kin and not a commodity.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I offer cultural healings known as Limpias. I’m honored to support the community in this way.
Limpias are a form of culturally relavent healthcare, centered on cleaning and repairing the threads between ancestry , land, culture, and cosmos. Limpias work with elements and beings to mend lineage, restore clarity, intact humanness, and support the heart and will.
If we knew you growing up, how would we have described you?
As a child I worked a lot, between sports, jobs, and home life. I was raised by an immigrant father and like minded mother. I was a very spiritual kid, it led me to having a strong sense of personal integrity as I got older.
