Conversations with Megan Gray

Today we’d like to introduce you to Megan Gray.

Hi Megan, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
I consider myself a lifelong artist—from the moment I could hold crayon to paper, I knew that art marking was important to me.

It was always something I ‘just did’ for enjoyment and mostly kept to myself. After encouragement from family and friends, I began sharing some of my work at local galleries and on social media. Eventually I was recommended for a mural job. At this time, my only experience painting a mural was when I was 10 years old at school. Imposter syndrome was so REAL, but I trusted that I was more than capable of pulling it off.

That mural launched my art career in the summer of 2020, and I’m proud to say that I am now a full time artist! Painting murals, hosting paint-a-longs, and running an online art shop. A life long passion turned career artist!

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
The biggest struggle is the uncertainty of it all…

It took a great leap of faith becoming a full time artist! It takes a lot of discipline to stay motivated and continue to attract new clients.

And like most jobs, there are good days and bad days…even when you’re the boss. But those challenges are also wonderful lessons providing opportunities for growth. I’ve learned so much over the years running my small art business—and those growing pains have only made me more resilient, stronger and knowledgeable.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I developed many of my proudest works during my 20s—a series of graphite portraits that include elements of nature. I really enjoy depicting human connection with the natural world.

I also enjoy painting landscapes and seascapes, but my latest obsession is painting kelp forests. I LOVE depicting bull kelp dancing in the underwater current. These works have been most popular in sales and requested for murals.

Do you have any advice for those looking to network or find a mentor?
Fortunately for me, there are a few artists in the area that I have befriended and can compare notes with. Otherwise there are so many wonderful resources available online—you can virtually learn anything these days on YouTube!
