Today we’d like to introduce you to Karen Baltz Gibbs.
Hi Karen, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
I knew exactly what I wanted to do at sixteen years old, standing in the career office at my high school in Ronan, Montana. I opened a booklet, found the page describing Physical Therapy, and felt something click — this was how I wanted to help people. Growing up on a reservation in rural Montana came with its hardships, but it also taught me empathy and gave me a front‑row seat to the strength of hardworking people who pushed through pain without the knowledge or resources to care for their bodies. I was also a runner from the moment I could remember — sprinting in dresses, boots, Keds, whatever shoes I had on. Running became my lifeline, my outlet, and ultimately the thing that carried me forward. It got me recruited to George Fox University, where I earned my degree in Athletic Training. A visiting LMT demonstrated massage techniques one day, and I knew I wanted to add that skill to my toolbox. I became a Licensed Massage Therapist, then went on to earn my Doctorate in Physical Therapy at Pacific University. Throughout all those years, I volunteered at every sporting event I could, learning from athletes, coaches, and real‑world movement.
I worked in private practice, then spent 15 years in a corporate hospital system before returning to private practice. Eventually, moral injury and physical strain caught up with me, and I stepped away from the profession during a time when my mother’s health was declining. After her passing, I took time to heal- physically, emotionally, spiritually. In that quiet space, I realized I still loved serving others as a Physical Therapist. With inspiration from a neighbor who trained clients in her garage, guidance from Physical Therapist and business coach Morgan Meese (DPTtoCEO), and encouragement from colleagues and former patients, I decided to build something of my own. That vision became Garage Training & Rehab Gym; a place where Physical Therapy, strength training, massage therapy, and nutrition coaching come together. Today, I’m proud of the clinic and gym I’ve built, grateful for the people who helped me get here, and committed to empowering others to move, heal, and live stronger lives.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
The path to Garage Training & Rehab Gym wasn’t a straight line. Growing up on a reservation in rural Montana meant navigating hardship early, and those experiences shaped my resilience but also taught me how heavy life can feel without support. Later, in my professional life, I faced a different kind of challenge: the moral injury and physical toll that came from years in a corporate hospital system. I was exhausted, injured, and questioning whether I could stay in a profession I once felt called to. At the same time, my mother’s declining health and eventual passing brought a level of grief that forced me to pause everything. Stepping away from Physical Therapy felt like losing a part of myself, but it also gave me space to heal, reflect, and rebuild. The journey back was slow and intentional. I had to confront burnout, rediscover my purpose, and find the courage to create something new. Opening Garage Training & Rehab Gym meant pushing through fear, learning business skills I never expected to need, and trusting that my community would show up, and they did. Every obstacle taught me something essential about strength, compassion, and perseverance, and those lessons live in the work I do today.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
At Garage Training & Rehab Gym, I blend Physical Therapy, strength training, licensed massage therapy, and nutrition coaching into one integrated approach to human health. I specialize in helping people move better, recover from injury, build strength, and understand their bodies in a way that empowers them long‑term. I’m known for combining clinical expertise with practical, real‑world coaching, whether that’s rehabbing a shoulder, improving running mechanics, supporting women’s health, or guiding someone through sustainable habit change. What I’m most proud of is creating a space where people feel seen, supported, and capable of becoming stronger in every part of their lives. What sets me apart is the depth and range of my background: Athletic Training, Licensed Massage Therapy, Doctor of Physical Therapy, strength and conditioning, and Precision Nutrition coaching. That combination allows me to treat the whole person, not just the injury. My work is rooted in empathy, education, and meaningful connection, and that’s the foundation of every session, every program, and every transformation that happens inside the garage.
Is there a quality that you most attribute to your success?
The most important quality in my work is real, honest, two‑way communication that helps patients and clients feel understood, supported, and empowered. I’ve learned that people heal best when they feel safe asking questions, sharing their concerns, and being part of the plan. Alongside that, my determination has carried me through every chapter of my career. When someone comes to me in pain, overwhelmed, or unsure where to start, I’m committed to doing everything I can to help them move forward. That combination of clear communication and unwavering determination is at the heart of how I practice and the reason Garage Training & Rehab Gym has become a place where people trust the process and believe in their own strength.
