Check Out Joseph Rivera’s Story

Today we’d like to introduce you to Joseph Rivera.

Joseph, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?

Hearts for Hospice was founded to provide affordable solutions for people navigating difficult life transitions. What began with just a handful of volunteers has grown steadily, expanding our presence and impact in the community.

Our success is largely driven by the dedication of our volunteers and their commitment to helping those in need access affordable, refurbished medical equipment.

We operate a retail shop at 444 Main St in Springfield, as well as a warehouse location at 4660 Main St, Hyland Business Park, Building B. Both locations function as thrift shops, offering a mix of everyday thrift items alongside refurbished medical equipment.

We are still in the early stages of our growth and remain focused on continuing to expand our reach and support as many people in our community as possible.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It has not been a smooth road. Building something like Hearts for Hospice comes with real challenges, especially in the beginning. One of the biggest struggles was gaining trust. Hospice is a sensitive space, and families are understandably cautious about who they let in during such a vulnerable time. Earning that trust took consistency, transparency, and a lot of patience.

Another challenge was resources. Like many growing organizations, there were moments where the vision was bigger than the budget. That meant finding creative ways to operate, building partnerships, and staying disciplined with every decision to keep things moving forward.

There were also challenges on the awareness side. Not everyone fully understands what hospice care involves or the kind of support families actually need. A lot of effort has gone into education, outreach, and making sure people know we are there and what we stand for.

Through all of that, the key has been staying focused on the mission. Every obstacle forced growth, better systems, and stronger relationships, which ultimately helped shape where Hearts for Hospice is today.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
My name is Joseph Rivera, and I serve as the Marketing Director for Hearts for Hospice. My background includes graphic design, photography, videography, and strategic marketing. What I take the most pride in is helping grow a meaningful organization and elevating its visibility on a larger scale.

What sets me apart is that my work goes beyond a paycheck. I am genuinely invested in building this organization and helping it thrive long term. My drive comes from a real passion for supporting the community and making sure those in need have access to affordable medical equipment.

Can you talk to us a bit about the role of luck?
I don’t believe in luck, good or bad. I believe there are times when things get difficult, but determination is what drives success. It comes down to staying consistent, pushing through challenges, and refusing to give up when things get tough. More often than not, you are closer than you think, and the difference is whether you keep going or stop.
