Today we’d like to introduce you to Heidi Semler.
Hi Heidi, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
My career began in 1989 when I started working for an interior design firm in Portland, Oregon. I worked alongside some of the most talented interior designers in Portland at the time. I worked for eight years, cultivating my design sense, understanding the importance of scale, and learning to see and think critically about every space we designed. In August of 1997, I went out on my own and started Heidi Semler Interior Design. I’ve been working on residential homes in Portland, Arkansas, Utah, California, and Texas. I feel so grateful to have found work I love, and to get to use my creativity every day on every project.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It has not been a smooth road. Balancing design work with running a business has been a huge learning curve over the years. I’ve had my ups and downs and am always looking for ways to improve our process as things constantly change. I’ve learned that you must run the business in a way that enables you and your team to do the best work possible. Ensuring you have a solid financial plan is critical to the business’s success. Listen very carefully to every client to make sure you don’t miss any important information needed for the project’s success. Turn every obstacle into a positive for your business. And have fun along the way.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
Heidi Semler Interior Design is located in Portland, Oregon. We do residential interior design and interior decoration. We have two full-time employees and one bookkeeper who works two days a week. We work on new builds, interior renovations, and interior decoration in homes. Our work is traditional with a bit of modern added here and there. We love light and bright interiors. The overall look we want to accomplish is a home that feels curated over time. We love to use existing pieces our clients own and then focus on what needs to be added to pull everything together. We have a very organized process to our work that has taken years to perfect. I believe that it is one thing that sets us apart from others. I’m proud that we run our projects with clarity and strong communication throughout. I’m proud that our brand creates beautiful work that incorporates the personality of the client(s) we work with. The end result looks like a home that the clients live in and fits their personality 100%. I’m guiding the projects along the way to keep things looking beautiful and incorporating what the clients want and need.
We’d be interested to hear your thoughts on luck and what role, if any, you feel it’s played for you?
I don’t think good luck or bad luck has played a role in my life or business. I’ve always put myself out there to pursue the work and life I want.
