Community Highlights: Meet Jayson Tuma of High Desert Blinds

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jayson Tuma.

Hi Jayson, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
We got in to window treatments because of my cousin who encouraged us to start up a business. My wife (Elizabeth) and I were looking at doing something different with our careers, so we left our respective industries to take the knowledge we had gleaned from remodeling, design, management, and sales, and focused on starting High Desert Blinds as a premier window treatment business, basically from the ground up. We live and grew up in the high desert, so it was a fitting name for our company. Our ultimate goal was and is to engage with our community and bring the best in product and service to this beautiful, growing area of Oregon—a land we love.

God has blessed this little company with growth and expansion, relatively fast and steady, the past five years. In ways this has prompted some key milestones like bringing on a full-time in-house installer as well as a part-time installer and designer, and branching further into the outdoor shades and awnings market and home automation/motorization aspect of window coverings. We also took on challenging projects and some of those projects have been featured in architectural magazines.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
There are ALWAYS challenges when growing a small business! Instead of being discouraged by the rise of other similar businesses in this area, particularly those from franchises, we continue to focus on what makes us unique from the competition (personable communication with clients, acute attention to detail, our mobile service and approach to design consultations) and often times refer people to competition if they’re looking for something we are unable to accommodate. We are not a franchise affiliate so much of what we do isn’t packaged for us; we have had to learn the hard way in many cases. That said, the slower times that can occur are perfect times to recalibrate and look at revamping our marketing strategies. I’m personally driven to utilize downtime in one of two ways—either for regrouping on our marketing strategies or for taking time away to enjoy travel, which my wife and I love.

Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
We specialize in window treatments, which include:
Custom blinds
Shutters
Shades
Exterior shades
Awnings
Drapery & curtains
Blinds installation
Home automation

We take customers/clients through an in-home consultation where are designer shows them the best options for what they’re looking for regarding window treatments. We measure, order to exacts and install–start to finish our team sees a project through to the end and beyond, as our goal is to have repeat customers and referral by word of mouth.

Our team is the business. We are professionally trained for the job and continue to update ourselves on trends, techniques and technology. We think highly of the people we hire and trust them to be the face of this company to the public. The design consultation is crucial and my wife and I team up to help our clients figure out the best route to take for their space, but the installation is the grande finale of the overall experience and our installer carries the ball home with ease, expertise and great customer service. We are grateful to have our team.

We know that it is imperative to make sure our clients have felt taken care of by our company and people, as integrity is important to us. Often times we become friends with clients! Window coverings can be a large investment and there is trust that needs to be built between us and our clients. We love it when long lasting relationships come out of client connections, ultimately leading to more referrals, as I mentioned.

So, before we go, how can our readers or others connect or collaborate with you? How can they support you?
We love collaborating with builders, designers and realtors and offer incentives through our referral program. Connecting with different aspects in home and business real-estate is important to us.
