Today we’d like to introduce you to Kristin Faus.
Hi Kristin, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
I’ve been self-employed for most of my adult life. As a single mom, this suited me very well, giving me the ability to schedule around my parenting priorities. When my child was grown and I got my massage license in “21, I was looking forward to a break from the hustle and having a job I could clock in and out for, and depend on a steady check. But God had other plans! Only about a year and a half in to my massage career, my boss presented me with the option of becoming independent, and moving into a big, beautiful room with bay windows. As an artist, I could not refuse! But this also meant I’d have to supply all my own equipment and decor, AND I was in the middle of a year that I’d challenged myself with buying no “things”. The rules were: I could buy consumables like food, and gas… and crayons…” lol that’s my artist/crayon-eating-child joke, but all joking aside, art supplies were indeed on that list. If something broke, I had to fix it. I could also buy parts to fix things. But I certainly couldn’t buy a room full of massage-studio-stuff. I did make one exception for brand new linens, which I could reason was my business making the purchase. Not Kristin. Otherwise, I already had a massage table, (Or I would have built it!) and the rest were items I re-purposed, re-surfaced, treasures gathered from home, and from free-pages. My years of resourceful living were paying off. Chairs were painted, dressers refinished, curtains sewn, tables built, art created for the walls, and plants for those beautiful bay windows propagated from home. ….What I ended up designing, caused a lot of jaws to drop! People kept asking me if I’d come “do” their house! One client even wanted to borrow my chairs for her wedding! Briefly I considered a career change…lol… but this kind of work can’t be reproduced, and when the initial novelty wore off, the jaw dropping returned back to the massage table… but people continued to react with such delight when they walked in, that I realized what I was offering was more than massage. It was an experience. Fast forward 3 years, and I’ve gone completely independent, found an equally gorgeous room in an equally gorgeous historic house in a much more tranquil neighborhood. And even with the move, and long after my year of buying no things was through, I continue to discover that less is more. The more I simplify, the more intentional everything becomes. This mirrors my space, my practice and my faith journey. Looking back, I can see that I was being guided to build something that reflects my values, creativity and vision… not just providing a paycheck. What matters most is work done well… genuine hospitality, meaningful work, caring for people and trusting God with the rest.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
One challenge I’ve faced is balancing growth with intentionality. As my business has grown, I’ve had to continually ask myself what’s essential and what isn’t. In an industry where many are offering different specialties and gadgets and different modalities, it’s tempting to add more, to add value. What I find that people actually appreciate most, is just a job well done. They want to know that they’ve come to the right place, be genuinely cared for, and receive care that feels worthy of their investment.
Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about Luminary Massage Ministry ?
My work focuses on restorative, nervous system-centered bodywork delivered in a beautiful, serene environment. I believe in the body’s ability to heaI when given the right support. A body can’t heal when it’s stressed, so my first job in my role as support for a person, is to show the body it is safe to heal. Because of this, I make sure the experience begins the moment someone walks in the door. Every detail, from the atmosphere, to the quality of the bodywork itself is intentionally designed to help people feel at ease, cared for and confident that they’ve come to the right place. Many clients tell me they begin to relax before they ever get on the table. To me that’s a huge win.
The word “Ministry” comes from the idea of serving others. My faith is at the heart of the way I serve. Luminary Massage Ministry is a warm, safe environment where people from all backgrounds are welcome. My faith informs my commitment to care, stewardship, and compassion.
In a world of rushed services and endless options, I’m passionate about doing a few things extremely well.
We love surprises, fun facts and unexpected stories. Is there something you can share that might surprise us?
Many people who know me don’t know that while attending the UofO, I worked as a farmhand milking goats. I’m a Duck and a milkmaid!
People are sometimes surprised that I work as a massage therapist despite having two college degrees.
Honestly it makes perfect sense to me. I’ve always been drawn to hands-on work, whether that’s caring for animals, growing things, building furniture, creating beautiful spaces and using my hands in service to healing. Looking back, there’s a common thread running through all of it: caring for living things and helping them thrive. I’ve never been afraid of hard work.
