I purchased Imani Institute of Cosmetology because I saw a gap in the industry — and a change I wanted to make and help talented people who wanted a real career in beauty, but needed training that was hands-on, affordable, and truly connected to what the profession requires. From the beginning, my goal was to build more than a school. I wanted to create a place where students are known, mentored, and held to a high standard — not just in technique, but in professionalism, confidence, and the ability to build a sustainable career.
Over the years, that vision has grown into what Imani is today: a family-run, student-centered institute in Medford, Oregon, licensed by the state and built around real-world education. We intentionally chose not to pursue federal accreditation so we could keep tuition accessible and maintain the flexibility to evolve our curriculum with the industry. As we expanded our facility and programs, we continued to invest in advanced training and technology — while staying rooted in the values that matter most to us: integrity, consistency, and a positive, drama-free culture.
Today, I’m proud of what we’ve built — a place where students can transform their future through skill, discipline, and support. And I’m even more committed to continuing to raise the bar, operate at an elite standard, and help the next generation of professionals step into their careers with both excellence and purpose.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
No — it hasn’t been a smooth road, and I don’t think building anything meaningful ever is. Like most small business owners, I’ve had to learn by doing, make hard calls, and keep moving forward even when things felt uncertain.
One of the biggest challenges has been navigating compliance and regulation while still protecting what makes Imani special — a hands-on, student-centered experience with high standards. Running a licensed career school means you have to be extremely organized, document everything, and stay ready for scrutiny at any time. That level of responsibility is real, and it takes discipline and constant attention.
Another challenge has been growth itself — expanding our space, investing in equipment and advanced training, and building the right team while keeping our culture strong. When you’re committed to a positive, drama-free environment, you have to guard it. Not everyone is a fit, and learning to set boundaries — with staff, students, and even the public — has been part of the journey.
And like many business owners, I’ve had seasons where life and business collided — personal responsibilities, family health challenges, and the emotional weight of carrying a lot at once. Those moments tested me, but they also clarified what matters: staying grounded, staying consistent, and continuing to show up for the people who are counting on us.
What I’m proud of is that we’ve kept our integrity through it all. We’ve grown, we’ve adapted, and we’ve kept raising the bar — not because it’s easy, but because our students deserve excellence.

Imani Institute of Cosmetology is a family-run, student-centered career school in Medford, Oregon. We train future professionals in cosmetology, esthetics, nails, barbering, massage therapy, and advanced esthetics — with a strong focus on real-world, hands-on education. Is there anyone you’d like to thank or give credit to?
truly believe it takes a team with passion to build something that lasts. I may be the day-to-day driver of Imani building the programs, leading the team, staying on top of compliance, and making sure our students are supported and held to a high standard but the heart of what we do is carried by the people who show up every day with pride in their work.
Our instructors and staff deserve major credit. Theyre the ones on the floor teaching, coaching, and modeling professionalism every day. Their consistency, talent, and care are a big part of why students feel supported here and why our culture stays strong.
Dan also deserves credit for being a steady partner behind the scenes supporting the business side when needed and helping keep the foundation strong. Im grateful for the teamwork it takes to keep everything moving.
