Community Highlights: Meet Travis Woodrum of Oregon Mountain Coffee Company

Today we’d like to introduce you to Travis Woodrum.

Hi Travis, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
We got started while relocating to Southern Oregon. I had spent most of my childhood in Grants pass, but I hadn’t been back since high school. I wanted to bring something to Southern Oregon that I was passionate about.
Coffee is abundant in Southern Oregon, but I wasn’t looking to create something based solely on making money and fast transactions. I wanted to build a coffee company that I felt didn’t already exist. I’ve always had a passion for quality coffee and baked goods, so opening a cafe and roastery made sense. It gave me the chance to pursue two passions at the same time and be a roaster who also bakes everything in-house and sources the highest-quality ingredients and coffee beans.
I spent many years tasting coffee in an attempt to understand why coffee, no matter the quality or price, would hurt my stomach, and what flours or oils might also create problems. So my cafe is an attempt to bring together extreme time and hard work to create coffee and baked goods that do not lack flavor but also don’t come at a cost to your digestion.
We are here because we set clear goals, worked closely with a great team, and focused on everything we sell. We aim to be a go-to stop when people think of Oregon brands. We want to be the best, and we strive to be the best at what we do. We are new to the area (Medford) and new to the industry; we are excited and grateful for the growth and support we have gotten.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It has been smooth overall, but it has been busy and a lot of work. Due to purchasing an existing business, it will always come with pros and cons. Coffee roasting is a meticulous profession. Trial and error has become our friend, a common theme in learning to roast coffee and bake as a profession. Earning the trust of the current customer base, along with earning new ones, is a juxtaposition. Not having prior experience with roasting or baking has led to a lot of burnt beans and thrown-away desserts. Don’t be afraid to make mistakes; we have made a lot and will continue to. Learn from them, they are the greatest teacher.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
We focus on quality products, customer service, and developing our employees’ skills in and out of the business. Building a strong foundation for OMCC’s growth and services. We want employees who represent the business characteristics and their own at all times.

We strive to be consistently excellent.

We are known for our always-fresh, specialty-grade coffee; organic,fair-trade, handcrafted, and unique baked goods; and our great, friendly staff. We specialize in all three. What we specialize in sets us apart. It’s uncommon to be a roastery while baking everything in-house. We don’t use industrial seed oils, and we have gluten-free options, along with an OMCC original recipe for a protein loaf that’s great any time of day, with or without coffee. Packed with flavor and whole ingredients, and sweetened with maple syrup.

We are most proud of offering fresh, highly specific coffee that is palatable and coffee-forward, not sugar forward. We don’t compromise on the quality and consistency of our products or customer service every day. We want to be a reliable and highly enjoyable experience, 7 days a week. Whether at our cafe or your home.

We want readers to know that we strive to improve our craft every day. Bring us your coffee questions. Tell us how we can improve, and don’t hesitate to share what the perfect coffee is to you whether that means a little extra foam or a little less. We want to make it perfect for you. The full cafe and roastery experience.

We offer wholesale and online coffee bean sales nationwide. We want to answer all coffee questions. If you’re passionate about coffee and want to talk, learn, or apply, OMCC is the best place to be. We are looking to build the best team and customer base.

Are there any important lessons you’ve learned that you can share with us?
Patience. Patient with customers, patient with employees, patient with learning, and be patient with your goals. Learned to focus on the goal and not to put a timeline on it. Work hard, stay focused, and be patient.
