Conversations with Amber + Eric DePangher

Today we’d like to introduce you to Amber + Eric DePangher.

Hi Amber + Eric, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
Our story started when we met at a wedding networking event. At the time, we both had our own photography businesses, and pretty quickly realized we were good at different parts of the same thing.

Eric is more of the technical side of Sightglass. He has been doing photography for over 10 years and is really good with lighting, gear, composition, and making sure the final images feel clean and intentional. Amber comes more from the communication side and has been doing communication-focused work for over 15 years. She cares a lot about how people feel, how they are taken care of, and making sure the whole experience feels calm and easy.

Over time, we brought our businesses and skills together and built Sightglass Photo + Films into what it is today. We’ve now been married for over 7 years, have our dog Chloe, and spend our lives together working, creating, and trying to build the best life we can.

What makes Sightglass work is that it really is both of us. It’s Eric’s technical eye and Amber’s people-focused side coming together. We’ve been lucky to photograph and film so many weddings, events, portraits, and stories over the years, and we don’t take that for granted.

Today, our focus is honest storytelling, clean modern portraits, and creating a calm, low-pressure experience. We never want people to feel like they have to perform for the camera. We want them to feel comfortable, cared for, and seen as they actually are.

We feel really lucky to have had such amazing clients and experiences, and that is a huge part of what keeps us going. Sightglass has become more than just a business — it’s a big part of our life together.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It has definitely been an adventure. Coming from two separate photography businesses and building one brand together while also building a relationship wasn’t always perfectly smooth, but it taught us a lot.

We had to figure out how to combine our different ways of working, different strengths, and different ideas into one business that felt like both of us. There were a lot of conversations, learning moments, and times where we had to step back and ask what was best for the business and for us as a couple.

Looking back, we’re really grateful for that process because it made us stronger in both ways. It made us a better couple, better business owners, and a better team. Building Sightglass together has been a fun adventure, but it has also pushed us to communicate better, trust each other more, and create something that truly represents both of us.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
What we really focus on is the experience.

Beautiful photos and films matter, of course, but we know that how people feel during the process matters just as much. If someone feels stressed, awkward, rushed, or uncomfortable, that can affect how they see the final images. But when a client feels cared for, relaxed, prepared, and understood, they are going to connect with the photos in a much deeper way.

That is a big part of what Sightglass is known for. We specialize in weddings, events, and portraits, but we do not see photography and video as just showing up with cameras. We see it as helping guide people through the experience.

Our experience also helps shape the day before anything becomes an issue. We can talk through logistics ahead of time, help clients think through timing, light, locations, family dynamics, and the little details that can make the day feel smoother. And on the day itself, we know how to pivot when things change, because they almost always do.

Eric brings the technical side, making sure the work looks clean, intentional, and professional. Amber brings the communication side, making sure people feel prepared, heard, and taken care of.

We are most proud when clients tell us that not only do they love their photos or films, but that they actually enjoyed the process. To us, that is the goal. We believe when clients have an amazing experience, they are able to love the images even more because the photos remind them of how good they felt in that moment.

What do you like and dislike about the city?
What we love most about Portland is the people. We love the creativity, the fun stuff happening around the city, and the whole “keep Portland weird” energy that makes it feel different from other places.

The people we tend to gravitate toward here are not trying to put on a show or make their event look like everyone else’s. They usually just want to celebrate with the people they love in a way that feels true to them. That is one of our favorite things about working here.

What we like least? Honestly, how expensive the homes are. Portland is such a great place to live, but the housing prices definitely make it harder for regular people to build a life here.
