Today we’d like to introduce you to David Mucci.
Hi David, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
OdditiesForSale (O4S) started pretty small. I’ve always had an interest in unusual things, antiques, art, natural history and things that are a little outside the norm, so the business really grew out of that.
It started as an online business run from home, selling things I personally found interesting and thought other people would too. Over time, it just kept growing. We needed more space, then more inventory, then a warehouse, employees and eventually a physical shop.
Today, OdditiesForSale (O4S) has grown into a much larger online business along with our shop and mini museum in downtown Grants Pass. We sell everything from natural specimens and oddities to vintage medical pieces, creepy antiques and unusual decor.
A lot has changed over the years, but the basic idea really hasn’t. I still try to find things that are genuinely interesting and different, rather than just selling whatever happens to be trendy. It has mostly been a process of building it piece by piece, seeing what people respond to, and continuing to grow from there.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I would actually say it has been a pretty smooth road overall, but definitely not an easy one. There haven’t been a lot of major setbacks or dramatic moments, but there have been a lot of very long days, nonstop work and constantly having to adjust.
The biggest challenge has probably just been the amount of work it takes to keep a business growing. You can’t really get too comfortable. What worked a few years ago may not work today, so I’ve had to be willing to shift, change things and do whatever the business needs at that point in time.
A lot of it has really just been persistence. Showing up every day, putting in the hours, fixing problems as they come up and continuing to move forward. It has been exhausting at times, but I think being willing to keep adapting and doing the work has been a big part of why the business has continued to grow.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I’ve always been an artist and have also always had a pretty strong entrepreneurial mindset. I studied fine art, have taught art over the years, and if I were painting today, my specialty would be fine art oil painting.
I think that artistic side carries over heavily into OdditiesForSale. I’m drawn to anything visually interesting, unusual or unique. I can find beauty in nature and wildlife, but I can also find it in darker things, old medical pieces, forgotten relics, strange antiques and things that most people might not typically consider beautiful.
That really influences everything we do, from the products we choose to how they’re photographed, displayed and presented in our shop and mini museum. We definitely lean toward the dark and spooky, but for me it’s really about finding beauty and interest in things that are a little outside the norm. I’m probably most proud that I’ve been able to combine that creative side with my entrepreneurial side and actually build a successful business around it.
What does success mean to you?
I think success is building a life you’re proud of and having the tenacity to keep pushing when it would be easier to quit. It’s doing something that matters to you, enjoying what you’ve built, and knowing you earned the freedom that came with it.
