Conversations with Elijah Ray

Today we’d like to introduce you to Elijah Ray.

Hi Elijah, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I’m Elijah, a content creator, artist, and entrepreneur based in Portland, Oregon. My journey started by sharing my life online, including my experience as a transgender man, while exploring different creative outlets. Over the years I taught myself rug tufting, home renovation, DIY projects, fitness, and music, and began documenting everything on social media. Today I create content across multiple platforms, sharing everything from home improvement and art to health and personal growth. My goal is to inspire people to pursue their passions, embrace creativity, and realize that it’s okay to build a life that’s different from what others expect.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It definitely hasn’t been a smooth road. I grew up in a family where the safe, traditional path was the norm. The expectation was to get a stable job, play it safe, and avoid unnecessary risks. My life ended up looking very different. I took chances that most people around me couldn’t understand, from living in a tiny house I built in my backyard to keep pursuing my goals, to quitting my job to bet on myself as a full time content creator and entrepreneur.

Those decisions came with a lot of uncertainty. There were times when I questioned whether I’d made the right choice, especially when income was unpredictable or projects didn’t work out the way I’d hoped. Building a business around creativity means there are no guarantees, and success often comes after a lot of trial and error.

I’ve also chosen to share my life openly online, including my experience as a transgender man. That has made me vulnerable to criticism at times, but it has also connected me with people who needed to see that it’s possible to live authentically and create your own path.

Looking back, every risk taught me something. I learned that growth usually happens outside your comfort zone and that betting on yourself, while scary, can open doors you never would have found if you’d always played it safe. Those experiences have shaped who I am and continue to influence everything I create today.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I’m a content creator, entrepreneur, and artist who shares the process of building a creative life from the ground up. My work spans rug tufting, DIY home renovations, fitness, music, and documenting my journey as a transgender man. Rather than focusing on one niche, I enjoy showing the full process behind creating a life I’m proud of, including both the successes and the setbacks.

What I’m most proud of is that I built everything myself. I taught myself rug making, learned how to renovate homes, grew an audience across multiple social media platforms, and turned my passions into a career. Every project I take on is an opportunity to learn something new and encourage others to believe they can do the same.

I think what sets me apart is my willingness to share the real journey. I don’t just show finished results. I show the mistakes, the uncertainty, and the work that happens behind the scenes. Whether I’m transforming a space, creating art, or talking about my personal experiences, my goal is always to inspire people to take more chances, trust themselves, and build a life that feels authentic to them.

What was your favorite childhood memory?
One of my favorite childhood memories was building tree houses and constantly redesigning my bedroom. I was always creating something, rearranging furniture, sketching new ideas, or finding ways to make a space feel unique. Looking back, I realize those projects were the beginning of what I do today. I still love designing spaces, building things with my own hands, and bringing ideas to life. It’s funny how the things that brought me joy as a kid ended up becoming such a big part of my career and identity.
