Today we’d like to introduce you to Jeffrey Mertins.
Hi Jeffrey, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I started graphic design as a really young kid and after years of IT work, doing graphic design on the side, I decided to go back to school to gain an official degree in Graphic Design. During this time I worked as the manager for a couple of companies when the opportunity to purchase One Day Signs came available. I have owned the company for the past 6 years as the company is celebrating being in business for 35 years this year. My business thrives on reputation and keeping that is essential in making sure I give clients the best products possible. I go above and beyond in making signs and one of my greatest joys is knowing that my clients love the products I give them. So, even though I am a one man show, many clients tend to understand I do what I can to get to their projects as quickly as possible and a good product is always worth the wait, instead of getting something rushed that is not worth the cost or won’t last. My name is One Day Signs, which is a rough name to have, but changing that name after 35 years would not be wise. Don’t worry you will get your sign ONE day, it just may not be today.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I’m not sure if many roads are smooth. There have been many ups and downs but I’m thankful that through some of the toughest economic situations and various issues coming from other company owners trying to ruin my reputation and company, I have risen above and kept my own integrity and keep striving to become the best. This has been the greatest of challenges but I’m glad I’m still around and able to continue bringing smiles to my many clients.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I specialize in banners, signs (metal, corrugated plastic and PVC), vinyl cut lettering or die cut vinyl. I do both printed vinyl cut and regular colored vinyl. What sets me apart is constant communication with my clients to make sure they get what they want. Providing graphic design and being honest and open with potential issues and best practices so each client is able to make the best decisions possible. Printing with latex ink and using a matte laminate on my prints ensures color protection, weather protection, and the best viewing from any angle, even in direct sunlight. This sets me apart as many others use other inks and gloss laminates which produce a glare and an unreadable sign in the bright sun.
Any advice for finding a mentor or networking in general?
Always find someone who is willing to give you the best advice, even when it may hurt or not be what you may like. Look well upon yourself and keep your integrity so your reputation will keep those clients coming back.
