Conversations with Seth Howard

Today we’d like to introduce you to Seth Howard.

Hi Seth , can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
I started performing magic in the 7th Grade when my Science Teacher Mr. Crandall showed me a card trick. It was the first time I saw magic in person. I had always been fascinated by magic on tv but seeing in person was a whole other world. I begged my teacher to show me how he did it. He told me and that was the beginning of me being a magician.
I have now done magic for roughly 36 years and have been performing professionally for 29 years.
A few years back I was looking for a change in my careers and my wife suggested I do magic full time. She knew I had wanted to open up a magic shop. So with her support and motivation I opened up The Magic Shop & More on May 29th, 2021. Here we are almost 5 years later.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
I have a background in retail management so the retail side is easy. There have been bumps in the slow seasons. Two years into the magic shop I became an accidental screen printer. So now my shop consists of a magic shop and a screen print shop that I operate out of the back.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I’m a professional magician. I have three weekly performance gigs here locally. I’m known as ‘the magic guy’ in town in Astoria.
I’m most proud of the connection I have with the community here in Astoria. I love doing magic so if I’m walking down the sidewalk and someone asks to see a trick, I’m more than happy to show them one.

So maybe we end on discussing what matters most to you and why?
I want to be able to leave people with an experience. I want people to be entertained by my magic and my shop. I don’t do magic to fool them.
