Today we’d like to introduce you to Andi Hook.
Hi Andi, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
River Vann Interiors really grew out of a combination of skills that had already been developing for years. Lawrence has spent roughly three decades working in construction, cabinetry, and woodworking, while Andi’s background in interior design brought a different side of the process into the mix: understanding how a space needs to function, how it should feel, and how all of the pieces work together.
Over time, those two sides naturally started to overlap. Instead of treating design, cabinetry, and construction as completely separate parts of a project, we saw the value in bringing them closer together. That became the foundation of River Vann Interiors.
Today, we’re a family-run business based in Salem, Oregon, offering interior design, custom cabinetry, woodworking, and project support. We’re still very hands-on, and that’s something we’ve intentionally held onto as we’ve grown. Our goal isn’t just to make spaces look beautiful. We want them to work better for the people living in them, feel personal, and be built with enough care that they still feel right years from now.
And because we’re a family business, there’s quite a bit of personality mixed in with the sawdust. We named the company after the youngest member of our family, River, because he is a miracle to our family, and that miracle represented new beginnings, hope, and the kind of future we wanted to build together, something that will last beyond us.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Absolutely not. But I don’t think building something meaningful is supposed to be completely smooth. One of the biggest challenges has been learning how to turn years of experience and creativity into a business that actually works behind the scenes. Being a family-run company means everyone brings different strengths to the table, but it also means learning how to balance those personalities, responsibilities, and ideas while still moving in the same direction.
We’ve also had to learn a lot outside of the actual work itself. Designing a beautiful space or building a cabinet is one thing. Learning the marketing, systems, client experience, scheduling, and all of the little pieces that keep a business running is an entirely different skill set.
Growth has probably been one of our biggest lessons. We want to grow, but we never want to grow so quickly that we lose the personal, hands-on quality that made us want to do this in the first place. There have definitely been mistakes, pivots, and moments where we’ve had to rethink what we were doing, but every one of those has helped us get clearer about who we are and what we want River Vann Interiors to become.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
Our work lives somewhere between interior design and craftsmanship. We help people create spaces that are beautiful, functional, and personal, whether that means rethinking the layout of a room, designing custom cabinetry, building a one-of-a-kind piece of furniture, or helping guide a project from the initial idea through the details that make it feel finished.
We specialize in spaces that need more than a cosmetic update. We love figuring out why a room isn’t working, how it could function better for the people using it, and then creating something that feels like it truly belongs there. On the woodworking side, that often means custom cabinetry and built-ins designed specifically for the home rather than asking the homeowner to adapt to something off the shelf.
What sets us apart is that design and craftsmanship exist under the same roof. Andi approaches a space through the lens of function, feeling, and the people who live there, while Lawrence brings decades of hands-on construction and woodworking experience to how those ideas can actually be built. That collaboration lets us think about both the big picture and the tiny details from the very beginning.
We are probably most proud of the fact that our work feels personal. We do not want every River Vann Interiors project to look like a River Vann Interiors project. We want it to look and feel like the person it was created for. A successful project, to us, is one where the finished space makes sense for that family, that home, and the way they actually live.
We are also proud that we have stayed hands-on. There is something really special about being able to sit with someone while an idea is still just a conversation, help shape it into a plan, and then watch it become something tangible in the shop and eventually part of their home.
Is there a quality that you most attribute to your success?
Over the years, the public perception of success has changed in so many ways, but I think the key is defining what success means to you. For us, it means being grateful for what we have while still waking up each morning ready to keep moving toward our goals. Communication has also been incredibly important, both within our family and with our clients. Honesty, accountability, and the willingness to have difficult conversations when necessary go a long way. Success is not just about growth or recognition. It is also about building something we are proud of, treating people well, and continuing to improve.
