Today we’d like to introduce you to Dana Kammeraad.
Hi Dana, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I began my cake decorating journey 38 years ago. A very dear friend of mine wanted to teach me how to decorate cakes. I told her I didn’t have a creative bone in my body. After I had to order my daughter’s 1st birthday cake, I was horrified by how awful her cake looked and called her immediately and told her i was ready to learn. She taught me the basics of cake decorating and it took off from there. I am basically a self taught cake designer.
It was several years later my husband and family decided to move to Southern Oregon. I really wasn’t making cakes for anyone or professionally except for my family. Jump a few years ahead and I found myself at a crossroad on how I wanted to change my career path. I decided I wanted to take a leap of faith and open a home bakery. I made a few phone calls on what I needed to do to get my business up an running. I passed my home inspection and I officially opened Seize The Cake, LLC (my sister is who came up with the name of my business). With a lot of perseverance and dedication, things started to work out. It took a good 4-5 years to really get my name out in the community.
Once that happened I was making cakes full time, 7 days a week. I absolutely loved my job! I got to make people happy through my cakes for their life’s celebrations & milestones. It became my passion.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
No, it was not a smooth road all the time. Early in the beginning it was very difficult to get my name out there. I posted ads on facebook, I got connected with other creatives by joining a monthly network of other women owned businesses and also did bridal shows.. The bridal shows were instrumental in getting my name out there as well.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I specialize in creating custom cakes, cupcakes for all occasions, weddings, birthdays, holidays and dessert cakes. I am known for 2 things. 1 being my lavender cake with lemon filling and vanilla buttercream and my Chandelier upside down cake. I believe I was the only one in town that did that type of cake.
I am most proud of being published in the Southern Oregon magazine for 2016. I was also nominated and won awards through The Community Votes in 2024, 2025, and 2026.
I think what sets me apart from others is I always offered my brides and grooms a free 6″ replica on their wedding cake on their 1 year anniversary. I’ve also donated wedding cakes free of charge because it was the right thing to do.
Is there something surprising that you feel even people who know you might not know about?
That’s a difficult question.
It would probably be that my husband passed away in early 2025.
