Hi Derek, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
Like a lot of people in Southern Oregon, my path wasn’t a straight line. I grew up in Ashland and spent years working blue-collar jobs before building a career in the fire service. I eventually became an Assistant Fire Chief and EMT, where I spent more than a decade serving my community. That career taught me discipline, problem-solving, and the importance of helping people during some of the most difficult moments of their lives.
At the same time, I developed a passion for construction, real estate, and creating housing. I became fascinated by accessory dwelling units (ADUs) because they offer practical solutions to some of our biggest housing challenges while giving homeowners a way to build long-term financial security.
After retiring from the fire service, I decided to combine my hands-on construction experience with my passion for teaching. I launched my YouTube channel, That ADU Guy, where I simplify the often confusing world of ADUs—covering everything from planning and permitting to financing, design, and construction. My goal has always been to make the process approachable so ordinary homeowners can build quality housing with confidence.
Today, I continue to develop ADUs while sharing what I learn with a growing audience across the country. Whether I’m walking through a job site, explaining building codes, or discussing housing policy, my mission is the same: to educate, inspire, and help create more attainable housing—one project at a time.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It definitely hasn’t been a smooth road. Like most entrepreneurs, I’ve had my share of setbacks, financial risks, and moments where I questioned whether I was on the right path. Building homes is challenging enough, but trying to educate people while navigating constantly changing building codes, zoning regulations, financing, and public misconceptions adds another layer of complexity.
One of the biggest challenges has been pushing for more attainable housing in communities where change is often met with resistance. I’ve learned that creating housing isn’t just about construction—it’s about helping people understand why thoughtful, well-designed housing benefits homeowners, neighborhoods, and entire communities.
Starting a YouTube channel was another challenge. Creating educational content takes an incredible amount of time, and in the beginning there was no guarantee anyone would watch. There were long hours filming, editing, and learning new skills, all while continuing to build and develop projects. But I believed there was a need for honest, practical information from someone who was actually doing the work.
Looking back, those challenges have been some of my greatest teachers. They’ve made me a better builder, a better educator, and a stronger advocate for practical housing solutions. Every obstacle has reinforced my belief that if you stay committed to your mission and keep learning, meaningful progress is possible.
