Today we’d like to introduce you to Scott Haley.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I am someone who likes to work on things. So when I wanted to roast my own coffee for personal use I decided to go big or go home. We purchased a commercial roaster and started creating coffee roast that I liked. We started selling coffee beans online and then started our coffee shop about 16 months ago.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Creating the roast profiles was the smoothest thing for me. It was something that I could make an adjustment and see the results. Growing the business and learning how to market our products has been the most difficult part. I am having to learn from others how to make the business successful. I am learning new things everyday and am very thankful for the support from those around me.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I had an amazing career as a Deputy Sheriff for the Washington County Sheriff’s Office. I retired in 2024 after a 23 year career. The transition to coffee has been a dream of mine for many years. I love the interaction that happens in coffee shops. I read books and asked questions to learn how to roast coffee. That is my favorite part of my business. I really enjoy creating coffee roasts and talking about the process of roasting. The coffee shop is an extension of that passion and is a great way for me to connect with the community
What has been the most important lesson you’ve learned along your journey?
I have really leaned on my faith in God. Owning a business is a hard thing and can really cause some serious anxiety. So leaning on God gives me a solid footing to move forward. I have also really had to learn to ask for help. That is not something I do naturally. It has been great how many people have helped me figure this business out.
