Today we’d like to introduce you to Azragaura Zengia.
Hi Azragaura, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I’ve always been sensitive. I seemed to pick up on people, environments, and things I couldn’t necessarily explain, and I was reminded of that sensitivity often when I found myself faced with something that just didn’t feel right to me, which happened a lot.
Growing up, that sensitivity wasn’t simply misunderstood. It was treated like there was something wrong with me. Instead of being taught to understand what I was experiencing, I was made to feel the way I experienced the world was a problem, like I was an illness that needed to be corrected. I learned very early not to trust myself, because the things I felt so strongly were treated as evidence that something was wrong with me.
That wasn’t limited to my sensitivity. I grew up without any support for being who I was. Over time, that shaped the way I saw myself. I didn’t believe I was worthy of much, and for a long time I felt lost and hopeless.
But even through all of that, I always had a deep-seated feeling that there was more to be had in life. I could almost feel it sitting right at the edge of my potential, but every time I tried to grasp it, it slipped away. Right within my vision, but unmistakably elusive. It felt like a sick joke at times. Eventually, I started believing maybe I just wasn’t meant for more. I wasn’t worth it. I thought I was doomed to live a life full of unhappiness, doing things I didn’t want to do or being someone I didn’t want to be just to make ends meet. My mindset was basically, “That’s just how it is. Some people are lucky, and some people are like me, doomed to live a life of unhappiness and shit.”
One day, I found myself at another incredibly low point in my life. It felt like everything was falling apart. I had recently been homeless, and I really didn’t know where my life was going. In the middle of all of that, I had this thought arrive in my head. Honestly, it felt more like an intrusive voice than a thought: *Try energy healing.*
I was incredibly resistant to it at first. I had experienced energy work when I was younger and felt absolutely nothing, so I didn’t see the point. But the thought kept coming back. For weeks, I couldn’t seem to shake it until I finally said, “What the hell? What do I have to lose?”
So I started searching. I looked up and called several different practitioners until I finally found someone who just felt right. From the first moment I met her, I felt relaxed. Then the session started, and for the first time, I felt a lifting of this weight I had carried for so long that I didn’t even realize how heavy it had become. I had never thought I could actually feel free from it.
That experience changed the direction of my life. I knew I wanted to help other people experience that same feeling, the realization that maybe they aren’t stuck with what they’ve been carrying forever.
When I first started my own practice, it looked a lot like other energy practices, come for one hour, receive energy, then leave. But as I continued working with people, something became very clear to me: I didn’t want someone to feel better only while they were lying on my table. I wanted them to understand themselves better. I wanted them to leave with tools they could actually use outside of my office, so they could begin recognizing their own patterns, understanding their own energy, trusting themselves, and supporting themselves through whatever life brought up.
Over time, my work continued to evolve around that idea. What I do today isn’t simply about helping someone feel lighter for an hour. It’s about helping people uncover what they’ve been carrying, understand how it’s affecting their lives, release what they’re ready to let go of, and reconnect with themselves in a way they can continue long after they walk out my door.
In a lot of ways, I built the kind of support I wish I had when I was the person who believed life was just bullshit.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Smooth? Absolutely not. I think I’ve hit just about every pothole, detour, roadblock, and “what the hell am I doing?” moment possible along the way.
I think one of the biggest misconceptions about changing your life is that once you decide you want something different, everything starts falling into place. That has definitely not been my experience. Deciding I wanted more for myself was really only the beginning. Then came the much harder part of figuring out why I didn’t believe I deserved it in the first place.
I’ve had to unlearn a lifetime of beliefs about myself. I’ve had to learn how to trust the same sensitivity I spent years being told was a problem. I’ve had to figure out who I actually am underneath other people’s expectations, opinions, and ideas of who I was supposed to be. And I’ve had to do a lot of that while simultaneously trying to build a life and a business I had absolutely no roadmap for.
Building Modest Mystic Healing has brought its own challenges. I’ve made mistakes. I’ve spent money on things that went nowhere. I’ve created things I was convinced people would love only to hear crickets. I’ve changed my services, changed my approach, questioned myself, gotten excited, gotten discouraged, and had more than a few moments where I wondered if I should just give the whole thing up.
There also has been the challenge of building a business around something many people still don’t understand. I work with energy, intuition, and things that aren’t always easy to put into a neat little box. I’ve had to learn how to communicate what I do without watering it down to make other people comfortable, while also keeping it grounded and approachable for someone who may have never experienced anything like it before.
But probably the biggest struggle has been learning that trusting myself doesn’t mean I’m always going to get it right. Sometimes trusting myself has meant trying something and watching it fail. Sometimes it’s meant realizing something I was incredibly excited about wasn’t right for me after all. Sometimes it’s meant changing direction after I’ve already invested time, money, and energy into something.
I’m still figuring things out. I still have moments where I question myself. I still make mistakes. The difference is that I no longer automatically take those moments as proof that I’m not capable or that I don’t deserve the life I’m trying to create.
Sometimes they’re just potholes.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
Modest Mystic Healing is an energy alignment practice, but what I do has grown into something much bigger than simply working with someone’s energy for an hour and sending them on their way.
At the core of my work is helping people better understand themselves, what they’re carrying, what may be influencing the way they feel, think or move through their lives, and what they can begin doing to support themselves differently.
Energy alignment is a huge part of that. During a session, I’m working with the energy body to identify areas that may feel blocked, depleted, overactive, or simply out of balance. But I don’t want the experience to end when someone gets off the table. We talk about what came up, how it may connect to what they’re experiencing in their everyday life, and, depending on the session, I give them practical tools, exercises, meditations, or practices they can continue using on their own.
That’s probably one of the biggest things that sets my work apart. My goal isn’t to create a relationship where someone feels like they need me in order to feel okay. I want people to become more aware of themselves and more confident in their own ability to recognize when something feels off and know what they can do about it. If eventually you need me less because you’ve learned how to better support yourself, I consider that a success.
I also think my approach is a little different from what people sometimes expect when they hear “energy work.” I’m not interested in convincing anyone to believe what I believe, and you don’t have to consider yourself spiritual or understand energy before walking through my door. I try to keep what I do grounded, approachable, and connected to real life. We can talk about energy and intuition while also talking about boundaries, patterns, relationships, stress, choices, and the things actually happening in your world.
My work has also expanded beyond individual sessions. I offer longer transformative journeys for people who want deeper support, specialty energy sessions, group experiences, meditations, and educational classes designed to help people understand their own energy rather than simply being told what it means.
What I’m probably most proud of is that Modest Mystic Healing has been allowed to evolve. I haven’t tried to force it to fit into what an energy practice is “supposed” to look like. As I’ve learned more, listened to the people I work with, and understood more clearly what I want to offer, I’ve been willing to change it and change myself with it.
I don’t want Modest Mystic Healing to be known simply as a place you go when you need someone to “fix your energy.” I want it to be a safe place where you can step away from the noise for a little while, understand yourself more clearly, release some of what you’ve been carrying, and reconnect with the parts of yourself that may have gotten buried underneath all of it.
Ultimately, the work isn’t about becoming someone new. It’s about creating enough space to actually see, understand, and trust the person who’s already there.
If we knew you growing up, how would we have described you?
I was a very angry child, especially after my father died. But looking back now, I understand that there was a lot underneath that anger.
I experienced a whole slew of things that a child should never have to experience. There were times when I tried to speak up about things that had happened to me and wasn’t believed, and other times when I was made to carry blame and responsibility that never should have been placed on a child. There was a lot happening around me and inside of me that I simply didn’t have the tools or support to understand, so a lot of it came out as anger.
But there were also good moments scattered throughout all the shit.
Some of my favorite memories were incredibly simple. I would take one of our dogs and go sit by the pond, or I’d take these incredibly long walks down the dirt roads out in the backcountry. I could just wander, take in the nature all around me, and get away from everything for a while. There was a sense of peace out there that I didn’t necessarily feel in other parts of my life.
Our dogs and other animals were easily some of my best friends back then. There was something about being with them that didn’t require me to explain myself or be anything other than exactly who I was. I could just exist with them.
I think that says a lot about who I was underneath all of the anger. I was incredibly sensitive. I noticed things. I felt things deeply. I loved animals, I felt connected to nature, and I needed those quiet spaces where I could get away from everything happening around me.
It’s interesting looking back now because some of the things that gave me comfort as a child, nature, animals, quiet, simply being present and feeling what was around me, are things I still deeply value today. At the time, I certainly wasn’t thinking about any of that as spirituality or energy. I was just a kid trying to find somewhere in the world that felt peaceful.
