Today we’d like to introduce you to Laura Burlus.
Laura, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I fell in love with weddings when I was 9 years old. My oldest sister got married and I was the flower girl. I thought it was the most beautiful exciting magical day. I have loved weddings ever since.
My husband loved photography and is naturally talented at it. My nephew was getting married and he asked if he would take the photos. I assisted my husband that day and we decided to start a wedding photography business.
We did that for about 4 years. When we would work at wedding venues I did not like the way they treated the couples. We decided we needed to own a wedding venue. So the hunt began. It took 3 years to find a property.
Our goal was and still is to have a beautiful fun space that is affordable with hardly any rules. Most venues have way to many. People do not go to a wedding to cause damage. It happens but few and far between.
We also wanted people to be able to bring in their own alcohol and food. Anything that helps save them money. We don’t want people deep in debt just because they got married.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
The hardest part was finding a venue that was zoned to have weddings. You can not just have a wedding venue at a old house or farm. Zoning laws make the choice’s very slim. Most people have no idea until you get in trouble one day and are told this is not zoned for weddings.
We found the right zoning and then all the permits inspections and labor happened. It took 8 months to open.
And a lot of sweet equity as they say.

Where we are in life is often partly because of others. Who/what else deserves credit for how your story turned out?
I credit my Dad for giving me the loan to start the business my mom who helped with artistry and flowers. My father and mother in law who helped with maintenance and my husband who wears all hats. We also have a great team working for us. We have 5 staff members who do a great job!
