Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I have been running English Style Tearooms for over 25 years. I spent many years in England and Ireland where I acquired my love of teatime. When I came back to the States, my best friend and I bought Lovejoy’s Tea Room in San Francisco together. Together, we helped open 3 more Lovejoy’s locations and one ‘baby sister’ location called Lovey’s Tea Shoppe. While my business partner has been running Lovey’s in Pacifica, California, I was drawn to Ashland, Oregon because of the fabulous theatre scene and thought it would be a good fit for my style of tearoom!
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
I sadly signed my 5 year lease one month before COVID shut the world down. It took a toll on Ashland and greatly impacted my first few years of operation. Business has been slowly bouncing back, but it has been challenging to reach tourists. We advertise locally, but since tourists come from all over the country, it has been difficult to spread the word.
Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about Lovejoy’s Tea Room of Ashland?
Lovejoy’s Tea Room of Ashland is an eclectic, English-style tearoom filled with quirky and cozy mismatched china and furniture. Here, one can relax and unwind while enjoying traditional afternoon tea service surrounded by a feast for the eyes. Come in for our grand Queen’s Tea Service by reservation, or pop by for a cuppa and scones as a walk-in guest on a first-come, first-served basis.
So maybe we end on discussing what matters most to you and why?
I love creating a unique experience for guests. I’m passionate about outstanding customer service and making sure my guests feel nurtured and welcomed! Teatime is about slowing down and savoring not only food and drink, but the experience of life. I believe that in such a fast-paced, stressful world, the tangible, old-world experience of taking tea is invaluable to connect with one another and ourselves over delectable food and drink. It is an experience that is difficult to find anywhere else.
