Exploring Life & Business with Nick Valentine of ALLOY PERSONAL TRIANING

Today we’d like to introduce you to Nick Valentine.

Nick, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
Nicholas Valentine – Interview Bio

For more than four decades, I’ve had the privilege of building businesses, mentoring teams, and helping people improve both their businesses and their lives. Entrepreneurship has always been part of my family’s DNA. I grew up in a family of business owners whose roots were in the hospitality industry, operating everything from nightclubs to fine dining restaurants. Watching them build successful businesses taught me the value of hard work, customer service, and creating memorable experiences for people.

In the mid-1980s, I moved to Dana Point, California, where my life took an unexpected and exciting turn. My uncle, who had relocated to California several years earlier, became one of the greatest mentors of my life. He introduced me not only to business operations but also to the professional fitness industry. Through him, I had the opportunity to work alongside some of the world’s most accomplished fitness professionals, including champions who had earned titles such as Mr. Olympia and Mr. Universe.

Inspired by that environment, I began personal training my uncle’s executive clientele. Shortly afterward, I was recruited by a chiropractic center to develop and lead its fitness and rehabilitation department as Fitness Director. That experience allowed me to combine science-based exercise, rehabilitation, and personalized coaching to help hundreds of people improve their health and quality of life.

After many successful years in fitness, I decided to follow another family tradition and entered the hospitality business. I owned and operated several successful nightclubs for nearly a decade before selling them and launching a business consulting company. Over the years, I’ve consulted with businesses across multiple industries, although my primary focus remained hospitality, helping owners improve operations, marketing, customer experience, and profitability.

When my wife and I welcomed our daughter in Roseburg, Oregon, our priorities shifted toward family. We eventually settled in the Portland-Beaverton area, where we spent nearly a decade consulting with local businesses and becoming part of the community. Later, we transitioned into the travel industry, where we owned and operated a successful travel club for many years.

Like many families, COVID changed the direction of our lives. We returned to Ohio to be closer to family, but Oregon never stopped feeling like home. We always knew that one day we’d come back.

Recently, that dream became reality when we relocated back to Oregon. Today, I have the privilege of serving as the Director of Training at Oregon’s first Alloy Personal Training studio in Cedar Hills. Returning to the fitness industry has truly brought my career full circle.

I’m honored to work alongside an incredible team of fitness professionals and business leaders. Alloy’s founder, Rick Mayo, has built one of the most innovative and effective personal training systems in the industry, creating a proprietary training methodology that has transformed thousands of lives while helping fitness businesses succeed across the country.

I’m equally grateful to Steve Calderaro, owner of Alloy Personal Training Cedar Hills, for trusting me to lead our training team and care for the wonderful community of members he has built. Every day, I have the opportunity to help people of all ages become stronger, healthier, and more confident—and there is no greater reward than seeing someone’s life change because they decided to invest in their health.

Looking back over the last forty years, every chapter—from fitness to hospitality, consulting, entrepreneurship, and now back to fitness—has taught me that success isn’t just about building businesses. It’s about building people, strengthening communities, and leaving every place a little better than you found it.

Today, I feel like I’ve come home, and I’m excited for what’s ahead.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Not at all. Like most entrepreneurs, my journey has been filled with both successes and setbacks. I’ve started businesses from the ground up, navigated economic downturns, reinvented my career more than once, and learned that adaptability is one of the most valuable skills you can have.

One of the biggest challenges was balancing the demands of entrepreneurship with family life. Building businesses often requires long hours and difficult decisions, but my wife and daughter have always been my greatest motivation. Every career transition—from fitness to hospitality, consulting, the travel industry, and back to fitness—came with uncertainty and risk, but each chapter taught me lessons that made me a better leader.

The COVID-19 pandemic was another defining moment. Like many business owners, we had to rethink everything. It forced our family to leave Oregon and return to Ohio to be closer to family. While it was a difficult season personally and professionally, it also reminded us of what mattered most. It gave us the opportunity to regroup, refocus, and ultimately return to Oregon, which has always felt like home.

Looking back, I don’t see the challenges as failures. I see them as the experiences that shaped who I am today. They’ve taught me resilience, humility, and the importance of serving others. Those lessons have made me a better business leader, a better coach, and a better person. Today, I’m grateful to have the opportunity to help others improve their health and quality of life while giving back to the community that welcomed us home.

We’ve been impressed with ALLOY PERSONAL TRIANING, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
At the core of everything I do is helping people and businesses become stronger. Throughout my 40-year career as a business owner, consultant, and fitness professional, I’ve believed that lasting success is built through relationships, trust, and a genuine commitment to improving the lives of others.

Today, I’m proud to serve as the Director of Training at Oregon’s first Alloy Personal Training studio in Cedar Hills. Alloy isn’t a traditional gym—it’s a personalized, coach-led strength training community built around helping adults live healthier, stronger, and more active lives. Our evidence-based training system is designed specifically for busy adults who want real, measurable results in a supportive and welcoming environment.

What sets us apart is our focus on personalization. Every member begins with an in-depth assessment so we can understand their goals, movement patterns, health history, and fitness level. From there, we build an individualized path within our small-group personal training model, ensuring every workout is coached, purposeful, safe, and effective. Whether someone is 35 or 85, our goal is to help them move better, feel stronger, and enjoy a higher quality of life.

Personally, what sets me apart is the unique combination of business leadership and fitness experience I’ve developed over four decades. I’ve owned businesses, consulted companies across multiple industries, and led teams, but my greatest passion has always been helping people reach their potential. I believe exceptional coaching goes far beyond exercise—it’s about listening, educating, encouraging, and building lasting relationships.

The brand I’m most proud of isn’t defined by logos or marketing—it’s defined by the people we serve. Nothing is more rewarding than seeing a member regain confidence, eliminate pain, improve their health, or accomplish something they never thought possible. Those transformations are what inspire me every day.

If there’s one thing I’d like readers to know, it’s that fitness should never be intimidating. At Alloy Personal Training Cedar Hills, we’ve created a community where people of all ages and fitness levels feel welcomed, supported, and empowered. Our mission is simple: help our members live longer, stronger, healthier lives—and have a lot of fun doing it. Like alloy says,”Stronger Together!”

How do you define success?
For me, success has never been measured solely by income, titles, or the number of businesses I’ve owned. Those things can come and go. Real success is measured by the lives you impact, the relationships you build, and the legacy you leave behind.

Throughout my career, I’ve been fortunate to work in several industries—from fitness and hospitality to consulting and entrepreneurship—but one thing has remained constant: I’ve always enjoyed helping people grow. Whether it’s mentoring an employee, helping a business owner achieve a new level of success, or watching a client regain their strength and confidence, those moments are what I consider true success.

Today, as Director of Training at Alloy Personal Training Cedar Hills, success is seeing members accomplish things they once thought were impossible. It’s watching someone reduce pain, gain confidence, improve their health, and enjoy a better quality of life. Knowing that I’ve played even a small role in that journey is incredibly rewarding.

I also believe success is about staying true to your values. Character, integrity, and treating people with respect are the foundation of any lasting achievement. At the end of the day, I hope people remember me not simply for the businesses I built, but for the positive difference I made in the lives of others.
