Today we’d like to introduce you to Nicole Nystrom.
Nicole, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I’ve been in retail for over 20 years, but owning The Clothes Tree for the past 13 has been the most meaningful part of my journey. The store has been around for over 60 years, so I stepped into something that already had deep roots in the community.
Over time, I’ve worked to make it my own while still honoring that history—focusing on creating a space where people feel comfortable, confident, and taken care of. Retail is always changing, and every year has brought new challenges and growth, but that’s also what’s kept me inspired.
At the end of the day, a big part of my “why” is my daughter, Brielle. She reminds me to stay grounded, and I hope I am showing her what it looks like to lead with purpose, hard work, and create something meaningful.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It definitely hasn’t been a smooth road. One of the biggest challenges was shifting how people saw The Clothes Tree. I wanted to bring in styles that a younger generation would be excited about, while still staying true to the customers who have supported the store for years.
Finding that balance took time and a lot of learning. I had to be really thoughtful about what we brought in and how we showed up as a business.
I’ve also put a huge emphasis on customer service. At the end of the day, people can shop anywhere—but how you make them feel when they walk through your doors is what really matters.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
The Clothes Tree is a women’s boutique that’s been part of Corvallis for over 60 years, and I’ve worked to create a space that feels welcoming, inclusive, and easy to shop.
One thing that’s really important to me is quality. I personally pick out most of our inventory in person, so I can see how things fit, feel the fabrics, and make sure we’re bringing in pieces that our customers will love and wear again and again.
We carry a mix of clothing, shoes, and accessories for a wide range of styles and ages, but what really sets us apart is how we take care of people. We’re here to help, style, and make shopping feel enjoyable.
What I’m most proud of is the community we’ve built—it truly feels like more than just a store.
Do you have any advice for those looking to network or find a mentor?
One of the most valuable things I’ve done is get involved in my community and support what others are building. Being part of local organizations has naturally opened the door to meaningful connections and relationships.
I’ve also been part of a small group of women who meet once a month. Each time we bring in a different businesswoman, and it’s been an incredible space to share experiences, learn from one another, and stay connected outside of those meetings. We inspire each other, support each other, and genuinely want to see one another succeed.
My biggest advice is to be intentional—show up, stay consistent, and focus on building real relationships rather than just “networking.” The right connections tend to grow from that.
