Exploring Life & Business with Stuart Silberman of Stuart E. Silberman, Psy.D., LLC

Today we’d like to introduce you to Stuart Silberman.

Hi Stuart, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
In 2005 I was working on finishing my doctoral degree in Clinical Psychology with an Emphasis in Forensic Psychology interning with Colorado Department of Corrections. After completion of the internship, I remained onboard working as a psychologist candidate with maximum and administrative segregation custody level offenders.

In 2007 I was involved in a motor vehicle accident that left me with left frontal and left temporal lobe brain damage. I was stopped at a red light in Denver, about fourth or fifth in line, and was rear-ended by someone who had fallen asleep. They were going so fast they lifted up the back end of my truck, drove under me and as I was propped up at a 45 degree angle, shoved me into the car in front of me. The head injury destroyed this part of my career and left me with extreme executive function deficits (focus, attention, concentration, working memory and cognitive flexibility, inhibitory control, organizational abilities, time management problems, planning for the future and self-regulation), extreme daytime fatigue and wakefulness problems as well as problems with expressive speech.

Over the coming years, I tried many different types of therapies for rehabilitation. None of them worked and I moved back home to Oregon so my family could help me. In 2012, I found neurofeedback, a drug-free, non-invasive technique to help the brain self-regulate. After regaining my function, I passed the national board exam, obtained my license, and opened a private practice using neurofeedback as one of my main modalities of treatment, as I believe it was the one modality that was the most effective to help me clear the symptoms and to get my life back on track.

Dr. Stuart Silberman is a Licensed Clinical Psychologist in the State of Oregon, specializing in stress management and interactive EEG neurofeedback for adults and adolescents in Eugene, Springfield, and the surrounding communities.

After experiencing a traumatic brain injury in a motor vehicle accident in 2007, Dr. Silberman discovered neurofeedback during his own recovery journey. The treatment played a pivotal role in restoring his cognitive function and reshaping his career path.

Today, he integrates psychotherapy and neurofeedback to help individuals better understand themselves, regulate stress, and create meaningful, lasting change in their lives.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Absolutely not. The loss of my previous career left me with a loss of identity, excessive medical bills, student loan debt and loss of income…all for doing the right thing, stopping at a red light in traffic. Throughout my educational career, I put immediate gratification aside for long term goals and a career in the field I was studying for. To have it all taken away in an instant left me not knowing who I was anymore.

As you know, we’re big fans of Stuart E. Silberman, Psy.D., LLC. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about the brand?
My practice was created with the mission of helping others obtain the help they’re looking for to get their lives back on track. I believe people should not have to suffer when it is easy to help take that suffering away. I specialize in chronic pain, head injury, trauma, mood disorders, and peak performance. Most clients find me as their last resort, they’ve tried everything else and it hasn’t been effective enough. Most people have never heard of neurofeedback but are familiar with other modalities of psychotherapy.

I specialize in the Othmer Method of Infra Low Neurofeedback (www.eeginfo.com), a type of biofeedback. In this modality, sensors are placed on the scalp that measure the electrical activity the brain is already producing, and this activity is then shown back to the brain in real time, it is the brain watching itself in a mirror and realizing it is not functioning as efficiently as it possibly can and given this information, it automatically changes its own functioning to improve itself. Scientifically, this is known as self-endogenous neuromodulation.

Neurofeedback is helpful for a myriad of mental and physical health challenges. Lately, I’ve been branching out into Peak Performance, an area of neurofeedback that targets exemplary functioning in athletes, executives, and anyone seeking to perform at the pinnacle of success and gain that competitive edge.
Whether you’re an athlete striving for victory, an executive leading with clarity, or a performer stepping into the spotlight, your greatest advantage starts inside.

Before we let you go, we’ve got to ask if you have any advice for those who are just starting out?
The road traveled isn’t easy and it is okay to ask for help along the way, especially when unexpected things derail your plans. With neurofeedback, one of the best things about the modality…you don’t need to re-experience your traumas in order to heal from them.
