Today we’d like to introduce you to Bryan Northrup.
Hi Bryan, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Half Pint Ice Cream Co. started as a family idea with a bigger purpose behind it. We wanted to create something fun, positive, and community-centered, but also something that represented our family’s heart for autism awareness, disability inclusion, and giving people meaningful opportunities to be seen, valued, and involved.
What began as a project to help my own daughter become more verbal a grow her own social integration with other kids by using an ice cream truck has grown into a way for us to connect with schools, families, local businesses, first responders, and community events throughout the area. Along the way, we’ve been able to support PTO fundraisers, school celebrations, community events, and inclusive opportunities for neurodivergent and disabled individuals to help build confidence, social skills, and real-world experience.
Today, Half Pint Ice Cream Co. is more than just serving ice cream. We are a family-owned, autistic-owned, community-focused business built around kindness, inclusion, and bringing joy to people in a simple but meaningful way. We’re grateful for how the community has supported us, and we’re excited to continue growing while staying true to the mission that started it all.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It has definitely been a rewarding road, but it has not always been smooth. Like most small businesses, we have had to learn a lot as we go — everything from licensing, insurance, inventory, freezer space, event scheduling, pricing, and making sure we are prepared for different weather, crowd sizes, and dietary needs.
One of the biggest challenges has been building something from the ground up while still keeping our mission at the center of it. Half Pint Ice Cream Co. is not just about selling ice cream; it is about creating a welcoming, inclusive experience and giving neurodivergent and disabled individuals opportunities to be involved in the community. That mission is incredibly important to us, but it also means we put a lot of thought and care into how we show up at every event.
There have also been the normal small-business struggles — long hours, upfront costs, figuring out what works, and learning how to balance family, work, and growing the business. But every challenge has helped us improve. The support from schools, families, local businesses, and the community has made all of it worth it. Each event reminds us why we started and motivates us to keep growing in a way that stays true to who we are.
We’ve been impressed with Half Pint Ice Cream Co., but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
Half Pint Ice Cream Co. is a family-owned, autistic-owned mobile ice cream business built around more than just serving frozen treats. At our core, we are about community, inclusion, and creating a fun experience that brings people together. We specialize in school events, PTO fundraisers, community celebrations, business events, birthday parties, and local partnerships where families can enjoy a classic ice cream truck experience with a meaningful mission behind it. Mostly we are known for our colorful trucks that our two young daughters designed. We give them full control over 97% of the business decision making, including the colors, logo design, and what percentage to contribute to other charity’s.
What sets us apart is the heart behind the brand. Half Pint was inspired by our family’s connection to autism and our desire to create opportunities for neurodivergent and disabled individuals to be seen, included, and involved in the community. When people book us, they are not just bringing an ice cream truck to an event — they are supporting a business that believes in kindness, inclusion, and giving people real-world opportunities to build confidence and social skills.
Our menu includes a variety of individually packaged ice cream novelties, including classic favorites, premium options, and allergy-conscious choices such as dairy-free, gluten-free, dye-free, and Halal-friendly items. We are especially known for working with schools and PTOs to create fun, easy fundraiser options that families enjoy while helping raise money for school programs.
Outside of Half Pint, my main career is as an engineering manager in the high-tech industry. That background has helped tremendously with the technical side of building and improving our ice cream fleet. From freezer systems and power management to truck layout, efficiency, reliability, and event setup, I enjoy using that engineering mindset to make our operation more professional, dependable, and scalable.
Brand-wise, I am most proud that Half Pint feels personal, colorful, and fun while still carrying a deeper purpose. We want people to smile when they see our truck, but we also want them to understand that our mission matters. Half Pint Ice Cream Co. is about great ice cream, memorable events, and building a more inclusive community.
Can you talk to us about how you think about risk?
I would say I am naturally on the more conservative side when it comes to risk. I like to think things through, plan carefully, and understand what I’m getting into before making big decisions. But Half Pint Ice Cream Co. has pushed me out of my comfort zone in a very meaningful way.
Starting this business from the ground up has been a major risk, especially from a personal and financial standpoint. Building an ice cream truck business requires a significant investment — equipment, freezers, inventory, licensing, insurance, branding, vehicle buildout, and the time it takes to create something people trust. It is not something we stepped into lightly.
What made the risk worth taking was the purpose behind it. This venture is not just about building a business; it is also an investment in my daughter’s future and in creating opportunities for kids and individuals who may need extra support, encouragement, or a place to feel included. That mission pushed me to take a chance I may not have taken otherwise.
I still care about building a financially healthy business, but profit has never been the only measure of success for us. If Half Pint can help kids feel seen, bring families together, support schools, create inclusive opportunities, and show my daughters what it looks like to build something with purpose, then I view that as a success. Even if the business did not succeed in the traditional financial sense, I would still take comfort in knowing that the main objective was met.
So, for me, risk is easier to accept when it is tied to something bigger than myself. Half Pint has taught our family that sometimes the most meaningful risks are the ones that challenge your comfort zone but align with your values.
