Deann, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
Misogi started after my business partner and I travelled to watch an eclipse in San Antonio. We missed the eclipse because of bad weather, but we ended up spending a big chunk of our time at a contrast therapy studio, chatting and enjoying the dopamine hit of cold plunging. Both of us are bike racers, and have had long histories of injuries and joint problems. Contrast therapy (the movement between hot and cold environments) turned out to be a great way for us to manage inflammation and recover from workouts. One thing let to another, and we decided it was time to bring this practice back home. We opened Misogi in the summer of 2025, with a focus on building community, encouraging healthy practices, and support for ambitious goals.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It’s been a difficult journey for sure! From navigating the construction and permitting process, to learning how to best tell our story. Corvallis was not familiar with contrast therapy as a practice, so there has been a lot of educating to be done. Beyond just building awareness of our existence, we’ve had to work hard to make sure folks understand the benefits of these practices and the best ways to use them to enhance overall health and wellbeing. It’s not a simple story to tell, but we’re up for the challenge.
Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about Misogi Sauna and Plunge?
Misogi is an athletic recovery studio that offers a variety of modalities that assist in increasing overall wellbeing. We offer traditional Swedish sauna, infrared sauna, cold plunging, compression therapy, myofascial release, and more. We also have a small coffee bar offering curated drinks to boost your energy. We have a welcoming space that anyone can drop in and use, with or without a membership, without reservation requirements.
Is there any advice you’d like to share with our readers who might just be starting out?
You can never do enough research. I wish I’d know more about the permitting and construction process, and how to choose the right partners for those parts of the business I couldn’t do myself. We fully bootstrapped our company, and while it’s good to avoid debt, it’s also far more stressful when you’re doing so much yourself.
