Hidden Gems: Meet Joey Speten of Skyline Video Production

Today we’d like to introduce you to Joey Speten.

Hi Joey, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I’ve never had serious career aspirations (outside of my childhood dream of writing for Lego Bionicle comics). My main pursuit was to be a husband and father.

So around 12 years ago, I wasn’t looking to get into a specific industry, I was simply searching for a job steady enough to afford dating my soon-to-be girlfriend (and to win her dad’s approval). I joined a local disaster restoration company and I started at the bottom of the totem pole, as a temp-to-hire on their fire & cleaning crew.

Over the following decade, I slowly worked my way up to Sales & Marketing Director at the same restoration company. During that time, my girlfriend became my wife and our family grew through births, fostering, and adoption. I was living my dream of marriage and family. As my career progressed, I started developing a passion for creative marketing, but being a husband and dad was still number one and I was not going to have them suffer more than they already had for me to pursue a dream/goal. I was more than content enough to set it aside.

But then this past year, I was approached by Skyline Video Production to join their team as president of the company. The opportunity to pursue my passion of helping other local businesses in my community, with an established like-minded team, without having to ask my wife and kids to unduly suffer, was a dream come true.

While it is a uniquely unsettling experience to be the newbie AND boss, the Skyline team has been welcoming, patient, and supportive. I feel insanely blessed to get to work alongside these people. And I am excited for what the next few years hold for us.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
If only! I know others have had it worse than me. And I am grateful for the life I’ve lived. But my wife and I have experienced chronic health trials, familial betrayals, miscarriages, and more.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about Skyline Video Production?
We are an Oregon-based marketing agency, helping local businesses with website design, digital marketing, and, you guessed it, video production.

Over 80% of people prefer to learn via video over any other form of media. Having quality videos to put your best face forward for 4 out of every 5 people can be the difference between closing down your business and expanding to the next town over.

And having these 3 services under one roof with a united message allows you to make strategic videos that are then put in front of the write people at the right time and draw them in to your website and sales funnel.

We’d love to hear about how you think about risk taking?
I am not known as a risk taker. Even when playing blackjack with fake money… I err on the side of protecting my losses. Having said that, I JUST went from a team I’d worked with for over a decade with a job I was 100% confident I could do to a new team with new expectations and timelines. So I’m a bit at odds with myself at the moment.
