Hidden Gems: Meet Patrick of Oregon shoulder institute

Today we’d like to introduce you to Patrick.

Hi Patrick, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I was born and raised in Oregon, so Medford felt like home. I started my practice here, founded Oregon Shoulder Institute, and over time built out a research program and a fellowship training program alongside the clinical work.

After years in the OR, I kept noticing that surgical outcomes weren’t just about technique — patients’ nutritional and metabolic status coming into surgery mattered just as much. That observation eventually led me to found Thrive Protocol, a perioperative nutrition company aimed at closing that gap.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Lots of them but it has been worth it!

As you know, we’re big fans of Oregon shoulder institute . For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about the brand?
Oregon Shoulder Institute is a subspecialty practice in Medford, Oregon focused exclusively on the shoulder. We see the full spectrum of shoulder conditions — rotator cuff tears, shoulder instability, arthritis, fractures — but we’re particularly known for complex cases: massive rotator cuff tears, revision surgeries, and shoulder replacement in difficult anatomies.

What sets us apart is the combination of high-volume clinical care with an active research program. The treatments we offer are grounded in evidence we’ve helped generate, not just guidelines handed down from somewhere else. We also train the next generation of shoulder surgeons through the Oregon Shoulder Fellowship, which keeps the clinical standards high and the thinking current.

For patients, what that means practically is access to a level of subspecialty expertise that’s typically found only at large academic medical centers — but in a smaller, more personal practice setting where you’re not lost in a system.
