Inspiring Conversations with Beven Byrnes of Bridges Middle School

Today we’d like to introduce you to Beven Byrnes.

Hi Beven, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
My journey has always been anchored by a single question: How do we build systems that actually see people? I began my career in education and nonprofit leadership because I believed that schools shouldn’t just be buildings where information is exchanged, but ecosystems that change life trajectories. Over the years, I’ve navigated everything from school operations to strategic planning, always with the goal of moving mission-driven organizations out of “survival mode” and into sustainable growth.
Today, I serve as the Executive Director of Bridges Middle School, a role that is deeply personal. Bridges was founded on the belief that students deserve academic rigor paired with an environment where they are truly known.
However, my professional path was profoundly shaped by a personal detour: walking through cancer treatment. That experience stripped away the “noise” and changed my perspective on leadership and resilience. It taught me that honesty and compassion are not just “soft skills”—they are the bedrock of effective leadership. This realization eventually led me to write children’s books, helping families navigate difficult conversations with the same clarity and dignity I strive for in my school community.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Any work worth doing comes with friction. In leadership, my greatest challenge was realizing that vision alone is not enough. You can have a heart for people, but if your systems, accountability, and communication aren’t aligned, the mission suffers. Learning to lead through organizational uncertainty while protecting a fragile culture was a trial by fire.
On a personal level, battling cancer was a mountain I never expected to climb. It forced me to confront my own mortality while simultaneously trying to lead a school and parent my children. It was a lesson in radical vulnerability. But I believe struggle creates a unique kind of depth. The most resilient parts of my leadership today were forged in those seasons of uncertainty. I’ve learned that resilience isn’t about “toughing it out”—it’s about moving forward with honesty and purpose, even when the path is blurred.

Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
Bridges is an independent school that specializes in the most “make-or-break” stage of development: the middle school years. What sets us apart is our refusal to choose between academic rigor and emotional safety. We provide both.
We are known for creating a “micro-community” where students can’t fall through the cracks. Because our staff knows every student’s story, we can push them further academically while providing a safety net for their social and emotional growth.
Brand-wise, I am most proud of our culture of integrity. We aren’t just a school; we are a resource for resilience. Whether it’s through our instructional quality or my own initiatives in storytelling and leadership development, we are focused on human connection. We want readers to know that at Bridges, people grow best because they are challenged, supported, and—above all—seen.

What do you like best about our city? What do you like least?
Likes and Dislikes About Portland, Oregon.
The Best: Portland is a haven for the “independent soul.” I love the fierce support for local nonprofits, artists, and educators. There is a collective willingness here to think outside the box and build things rooted in values rather than just profit. The intersection of nature and creativity here is a constant source of inspiration.
The Growth Opportunity: Our city sometimes struggles with the “bridge” between a great idea and a finished product. We have an abundance of good intentions, but we often lack the consistent systems and long-term accountability needed to sustain change. I believe Portland’s potential is limitless, but it requires us to align our visionary spirit with disciplined execution.
