Inspiring Conversations with Brett & Holly Burnham of Obsidian Roofing

Today we’d like to introduce you to Brett & Holly Burnham.

Hi Brett & Holly, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
Obsidian Roofing’s story is really Brett’s story.

Brett grew up in construction, spending time on custom home builds as a child and learning the value of hard work from an early age. Over the years, he built experience across multiple trades, working as a framer before eventually owning and operating his own stone and tile business. In 2016, he partnered with a friend to start Obsidian Roofing, combining his construction background with an entrepreneurial drive to build something of his own.

Even in those early years, I was helping behind the scenes with office work, customer communication, and the day-to-day administrative tasks that keep a small business running. When Brett’s business partner retired and Brett took over the company completely, I stepped into a larger role, and Obsidian Roofing truly became a family business.

Today, we’re building more than just roofs. We’re building a company we’re proud to put our name on—one that helps protect homes and families throughout Central Oregon. Our goal has always been simple: provide affordable, quality roofing with honesty, reliability, and genuine care for our customers.

Looking ahead, our dream is for Obsidian Roofing to become a name that is both recognized and respected throughout our community. Success, to us, isn’t just about growth—it’s about creating opportunities for the hardworking people who help make every project possible. We want to continue generating meaningful work, supporting local families, and quite literally putting roofs over the heads of our neighbors for many years to come.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
It definitely hasn’t been a smooth road.

One of the biggest challenges has been navigating an industry that is constantly changing. Material costs have increased dramatically over the years, making it more difficult for both contractors and homeowners. At the same time, we’ve seen an influx of larger out-of-town companies entering our market with significant advertising budgets and sales teams.

As a small, locally owned business, competing against those resources can be difficult. However, we’ve always believed that our strength is our connection to the community. We live here, our children are growing up here, and the people we serve are our neighbors. Rather than focusing on high-pressure sales tactics, we’ve built our business through word-of-mouth referrals, honest communication, and fair pricing.

The challenges have pushed us to work harder, improve our processes, and continually prove our value. In many ways, those struggles have reinforced why we started Obsidian Roofing in the first place—to provide Central Oregon homeowners with a trustworthy, affordable roofing option backed by people who genuinely care about the community they serve.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about Obsidian Roofing?
Obsidian Roofing is a family-owned residential roofing company serving homeowners throughout Central Oregon. We specialize in roof replacements, repairs, inspections, and maintenance, with a focus on providing quality workmanship at fair, honest prices.

What sets us apart is that we’re deeply invested in the community we serve. When homeowners call Obsidian Roofing, they’re working directly with the people who own and operate the company. We aren’t a large corporation or an out-of-town contractor—we’re a local family that grew up here, works here, and is committed to building long-term relationships within our community.

We’re known for being approachable, transparent, and dependable. Roofing can be a significant expense, and we believe homeowners deserve clear communication, realistic recommendations, and pricing that reflects the actual work being performed. We take pride in helping customers understand their options and make informed decisions without pressure.

One of the things we’re most proud of is that we’ve built this business together as husband and wife. Working side by side every day isn’t always common, but for us it’s been an incredible gift. We each bring different strengths to the table, and building something meaningful together has strengthened both our business and our marriage. There’s a special sense of purpose that comes from knowing we’re working toward shared goals, supporting our family, and serving our community as a team.

Brand-wise, what we’re most proud of is the reputation we’ve built through trust. Many of our projects come from referrals, repeat customers, and local professionals who continue to recommend us. To us, that’s the highest compliment a business can receive.

Ultimately, we want readers to know that Obsidian Roofing was built on a simple idea: provide affordable, quality roofing while treating people the way we’d want our own family to be treated. Every roof we install protects a home, a family, and often one of our neighbors. We never lose sight of that responsibility, and it’s what motivates us every day.

If you had to, what characteristic of yours would you give the most credit to?
If I had to choose the qualities that have contributed most to our success, I would say honesty, integrity, and grit.

We believe that doing the right thing matters, even when it’s not the easiest or most profitable option in the moment. Roofing is a relationship-driven business, and trust is everything. We approach every project as if we’re helping a neighbor because, in many cases, we are. Our customers aren’t just numbers on a spreadsheet—they’re families who are trusting us with one of the most important parts of their home.

At the same time, building a business requires a tremendous amount of perseverance. There have been challenges, setbacks, and plenty of moments where we’ve had to learn new skills and push beyond our comfort zones. We don’t pretend to have all the answers, but we’re committed to continuous growth and improvement. Every year, we’re striving to become better business owners, better leaders, and better at serving our customers.

That combination of integrity and determination has shaped who we are. We work hard, we keep learning, and we do our best to treat people fairly. In the long run, we believe that’s what builds a business that lasts.
